Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887, Spencer Co. L.R. KURTZ was born in Spencer County, Ky., July 4, 1861, the youngest child born to George and Eliza Y. (Wood) Kurtz. He was raised in Taylorsville, and received a good education at the best schools in the town. His father was an undertaker, and our subject, when not in school, was in the undertaking establishment until 1881, when he took a trip through the West. He first stopped at Colorado Springs, Col., and remained one year and a half. He then went to Denver, Col., for about eighteen months and then went to San Francisco, Cal., where he remained until the death of his father, which occurred June 28, 1885. He returned to Taylorsville, August 7, 1885, where he has since resided superintending the farm and undertaking establishment. Our subject visited several places of interest in the West. His father, George Kurtz, was born in Nelson County, December 8, 1809, the fourth of a family of nine born to George and Barby (Kemp) Kurtz. In 1833 Mr. Kurtz left his native county and located in Taylorsville, Spencer Co., Ky. Having previously learned the cabinet-maker's trade he opened an undertaking establishment, and was successfully engaged until his death. November 5, 1840, he married Eliza Y. Wood, daughter of James J. and Laura (Morgan) Wood. James J. was a son of James J. and Eleanor (Brown) Wood, both of Virginia. Laura Morgan was born in Nelson County, Ky., a daughter of William and Nancy (Northern) Morgan. Of the eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. George Kurtz, three are living: James W. married Lizzie Pugh and had three children, Henrietta, George and an infant; Lula married Mr. Thomas and had two children, Omie and Laura (Laura is now dead and Omie married a Mr. Dunning, of Denver, Col.); the third surviving and youngest child born to Mr. and Mrs. George Kurtz is L.R., whose name heads this sketch. Of the remaining five, all deceased, Laura married Mr. King and had three children, Ethel L., Bertha and Ella, all of whom live with our subject, L.R., and his mother; Kate was married to Mr. Black and had one child, Nettie, who married a Mr. Bennett, of Louisville; and three, Anna, Georgie E. and Ida died unmarried. Mrs. Kurtz is a strict member of the Baptist Church. She owns a half interest in the undertaking establishment, seventy-five acres of fine land, and two houses and lots in town.
