Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887, (Spencer) J.J. MARATTAY was born in Springfield, Washington Co., Ky., in 1840. His father, James H., was born in Pennsylvania in 1801, was brought to Kentucky when quite an infant, learned the saddler's trade, but later became a druggist; was assessor of Washington County four or five terms, and died in 1870. He was a member of the Baptist Church. The mother of J.J. Marattay was born in Nelson County, Ky., in 1801, and is a daughter of Jonathan Gore, of Virginia. She is now in her eighty-sixth year, and retains full possession of all of her faculties. J.J. Marattay was educated in Springfield, and from thirteen until twenty-six years of age was engaged in the drug business. He then moved to Little Mount, Spencer County, where he has since been engaged in the mercantile business and in farming and now owns 340 acres of land, on which he resides. In 1867 he secured the establishment of the postoffice at Little Mount, and is the present postmaster, which position he has filled, with the exception of three years, ever since the office was opened. He has also served as school commissioner. In 1863 he married Miss Susan, daughter of Samuel Ruble, born in Spencer County in 1841.
