Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Spencer Co. A. J. MASSIE is a native of Anderson County, and was born December 9, 1844. His father, Edward D. Massie, was born in Woodford County, Ky., in 1816, and died October 10, 1864. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He was a farmer by occupation. He was a member of the Legislature from 1858 to 1860, and was also orderly sergeant in the Federal Army. He married Martha, daughter of Shepherd Coots, of Shelby County, a farmer by occupation. She was born in 1822, and died in 1868. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Our subject passed the early years of his life on the farm. December 21, 1869, he married Amy Henry, daughter of John and Eliza (Allen) Henry, the former a leading farmer of Spencer County. Mrs. Massie died in 1881. She was a member of the Baptist Church, and the mother of the following named children: Allen B., Mary E., Martha, Annie V. and Drusie (deceased). Mr. Massie's second marriage occurred in September, 1885, with Mary E. Summers, who has borne him one child, Emily R. In 1885 he was elected deputy sheriff of Spencer County, and in 1887 elected sheriff, which position he still holds. Previous to 1885 he was engaged in farming, and is the owner of 430 acres of land in Precinct No. 7. He is a member of the Baptist Church and of the Masonic fraternity.
