Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887, (Spencer) T.R. MUIR was born February 27, 1853, in Louisville, to Judge P.B. and Sophronia (Rizer) Muir. His father was born in Nelson County about 1823, a son of Dr. William Muir, who was a native of Scotland. He is a lawyer by profession, and for many years was circuit judge for the Louisville Circuit, and was the first judge of the court of common pleas after its formation by the Legislature, of which body he was also a member. He, however, resigned his position as judge, and returned to practice in the well known firm of Muir, Byur & Davie, which continued until about 1877 or 1878, when the firm of Muir & Herman was formed, in which he now is and has a large practice. Mrs. Muir was a daughter of Capt. Jacob Rizer, of Nelson County, who was of German ancestry. She was born about 1825, and died in 1885, a member of the Presbyterian Church. T.R. is the fourth of a family of twelve children, was born and reared in the city of Louisville, and educated in the Louisville schools and Hanover College, where he graduated in 1875. After his graduation he read law awhile, and then moved to Burlington, Iowa, where he lived four years, and engaged in the wood, coal and ice trade, retailing and shipping South. In 1876 he married Miss Laura Wrightman, daughter of W.W. Wrightman, who was at that time mayor of Burlington, Iowa. After his marriage he returned to Kentucky, and in 1881 purchased a farm in Spencer County, Ky., of 275 acres, near Normandy Station on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, where he has lived and farmed since. Mrs. Muir is a member of the Elk Creek Baptist Church. Her mother was Catherine (Helmick) Wrightman, and both the Wrightmans and Helmicks were among the earliest settlers of that part of Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Muir have four children: Charles W., Sophronia R., Katie and Nellie While a student Mr. Muir was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
