WAKEFIELD was born in Spencer County, Ky., August 30, 1810, the eldest of a family of eight children born to Matthew and Rebecca (Heady) Wakefield. Matthew was born in Spencer County, was a miller and distiller, and was also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a son of John and Elizabeth (Alexander) Wakefield, both natives of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Rebecca Wakefield was born in Nelson County, Ky., a daughter of James and Eleanor (Jackson) Heady. In 1818 our subject, with his parents, moved to Spencer County, Ind., and remained about two years, then returned to Spencer County, Ky., but in 1845 moved to Louisville, opened a grocery and produce store, remained one year, and then returned to Spencer County, Ky. He has dealt extensively in mules, horses, cattle, etc. He married, December 10, 1835, Miss Mary E. Taggart, of Antrim County, Ireland, who came to the United States in 1835. Of the ten children born to their union, seven are living: Matthew, Mark, John D., James M., Joseph W., Mary A., and Annie E.
