From: "David Middleton Edelen II" Subject: my Rodgers family line Date: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 8:43 AM Hello, I am researching my great grandfather, Dr. John Fleming Rodgers, and his/my Rodgers line, which I know nothing about. I am trying to find out who his parents and/or line of Rodgers were. Below is an excerpt from my Rodgers file and what I have on him and that line so far. Any info you might have on your website pertaining to my Rodgers line would be greatly appreciated, and on the same token if you can use any of the info below on your site, by all means do so. I am more than glad to share what info I have. The Lester Samuel and Maude Janet White Rodgers at bottom were my grandparents. Of course the rest of the file, from them down to me and my children I have also if you are interested: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RODGERS FAMILY; LINE OF DAVID MIDDLETON EDELEN II: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: Dr. John Fleming Rodgers is as far as I have been able to go with the Rodgers line. I have been unsuccessful at finding his parents or line further back than he. Some of what I have was gleaned from old letters/postcards, and some was just handed down by word of mouth, and some info graciously given by people, including distant relatives met on the internet and organizations such County Historical/Genealogy Societies (see below). Their help and info is greatly appreciated. While trying to find out if Dr. Rodgers or any others were listed on old census records I found that on the 1840 census there is one family of Rodgers; Hardin Rodgers, one adult female, and one child, 10 years old or under. I wonder if that is the family of Dr. Rodgers, since he was born in Bourbon County in 1830. The age and date would seem to match. Also, on the 1820 census there were a handful of others; an Anne, Jack, two Joeseph, Milly, Samuel, Thomas, and Will. I wonder if those are related as well. Dr. Rodgers named his son from his second marriage "Lester Samuel Rodgers. Note the middle name. And also among some other cousins in the list below that came from some old postcards dated from 1907 to 1936, there was a Hardin Rodgers. I wonder who he was named after and if there is a connection there as well!!?? The following was copied from some handwritten info with some Rodgers' names on it, written on an old piece of paper in Lester S. Rodgers' handwriting: " Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers, an American Naval Officer, born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on 11/14/1819--died Washington, D.C. 1/8/1892. John Rodgers, an American Naval Officer, born in Harford Co., Md. 7/11/1771, died 8/1/1838. John Rodgers (son of Commadore John Rodgers), born in Md. 8/8/1812--died in Washington, D.C. 5/5/1882. He was Rear Admiral in 1871 and from 1877-'82. He was Superintendant of U.S. Naval Observatory. He rendered excellent service during Civil War." I wonder who the above people were or if they were kin to us or what their connection was? Surely there must have been some connection between them and our Rodgers or else why did grandfather Lester S. Rodgers write their names down? Or perhaps he was just jotted the names down in his research and later found there to be no connection. We may never know. On the other side of the paper was written the following names of which some if not all turned out to be cousins of Lester Samuel Rodgers, as was seen on old postcards to and from them in ther early 1900s. On some of the old post cards to Lester Samuel Rodgers it said at the end; "Your Cousin, Kizzie", or "Your cousin, K. R.", and another from Joe Rodgers, and Albert and Sam Roberts, etc.. So at least they are cousins of Lester S. Rodgers, but who their parents were is not known at this time. Here they are: 1. Mary--Mrs. Early Morris, cousin of Lester S. Rodgers. 2. Kizzie--Mrs. Wm. Renam, cousin to L.S. R. Living in Midway, Ky. around 1911. 3. Lizzie--Mrs. Richard Dixon. 4. Rosa--Mrs. Hubert Woodard. 5. Tille--Mrs. P.T. Moore. 6. Carrie--Mrs. Carrie R. Lucas. 7. Josephine Rodgers 8. Sam(S.H.Roberts) 150 1/2/ Market St., Midway, Ky. (was there around 1909, 1910, etc.. I'm not sure if he was the husband of Josephine or not), cousin of L.S.R.. 9. Albert Roberts, cousin of L.S.R.. Midway, Ky.? 10. John Rodgers, Midway, cousin of L.S.R. 11. Joe Rodgers, cousin of L.S.R. 12. Hardin Rodgers, probably a cousin.. 13. Claude Williamson, 404 Ohio St., Laforte, Indiana. 14. Molly Martin, Midway, Ky.. A lot of his cousins that he was writing back and forth to seemed to live in and around Midway, Ky., etc.. Here is the line as far as I have been able to go for sure: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A COUPLE OF NOTES PERTAINING TO DR. JOHN FLEMING RODGERS : His daughter-n-law, Maude Janet (White) Rodgers, my maternal grandmother, always said he was from Versailles, Woodford Co., Ky.. His obituary, which is not very informative atall and probably furnished by his second wife, said that he was born in Bourbon Co., Ky. in 1830 and died in his home, 2 years after having suffered a massive stroke, in Clifton, Woodford Co., Ky. in 1902 where he had lived the last 28 years of his life. He was married at least twice. Acording to some info sent me from Al and Margaret Spirey, Dr. John F. Rodgers and Margaret E. Pattie were married on Dec. 22, 1853 in Frankfort, Ky., in Franklin Co., Ky.. They attest to having seen the marriaged certificate that Dr. Rodgers filed in Franklin Co. and that Dr. Rodgers stated on it that he had been born in Franklin Co., Ky.. . According to John Wm. Rodgers, Sr., his father, Lester S. Rodgers, said he had some half-siblings from his Dr. Rodgers' first marriage, but never knew them or laid eyes on them. "Belle" Glass (Called "Ma Belle") was the second and last wife of Dr. Rodgers as far as I know. It had been thought that Sarah Isabel Williams was Dr. Rodgers' first wife and Belle Glass was the second. But upon finding Lester S. Rodgers' birth certificate and his obituary, it was learned he was the son of Dr. John F. Rodgers and Sarah Isabel Williams. There are some post cards dated from between 1909 and 1918, from Lester S. Rodgers to a Mrs. R. M. Glass in Taylorville, Ky. and other towns near there . Two or three of those old cards mentioned her being in Mason, Ohio with an Aunt Emmette in 1914 and 15, and again in 1918. I don't know if she was visiting and taking care of this Aunt or moved up there eventually. Lester started the note with, "Dear Ma". John W. Rodgers, Sr. said "Belle" Glass married or had been married to a R. M. Glass (possibly Robert). She must have married Mr. Glass more than likely after Dr. Rodgers died. Since Dr. John Flemming Rodgers died in 1902 when his son Lester was only 15 years old, and since later on after that Lester refered to Mrs. R. M. Glass as "Ma" in 1910 or so, then it stands to reason that Dr. Rodgers' wife remarried Mr. R. M. Glass after Dr. Rodgers' death and that "Belle" was indeed Sarah Isabel (Williams) Rodgers. "Belle" was probably a nick name and short for "Isabel". On the 1880 census for Woodford Co. it shows Dr. Rodgers, age 49, and a Sallie Belle Rodgers, age 17, living in the home of a family by the name of Shyrock. I wonder if our Belle Glass, "Ma Belle" , is this Sallie Belle Rodgers? "Sallie Belle" might have been an affectionate nickname for "Sarah Isabel". Indeed I have been told that Sallie was an old timey nickname for the name Sarah. "Sallie Belle", 17 yrs old in 1880, would have been 39 in 1902 when Dr. Rodgers died. She was of course most young enough for remarriage. Dr. Rodgers' obituary stated that he left behind a wife who had long been an invalid. I wonder what was ailing her!!?? Also, in a couple of old post cards and a letter from around 1930 Grandpa Lester Rodgers mentioned an Aunt Sallie and an Uncle Nick or Nicholos living in selma, Ala.. I dont' know if they were kin to him via his mom or dad, and I wonder if by chance that Sallie is the Sallie Belle Rodgers mentioned in the 1880 census, perhaps his sister. If it was indeed her then she would have been 67 years old in 1930. Dr. Rodgers also served in or was contracted with the U.S. Army in the War for Southern Independence: The 1860 census has him in Lawrenceburg, Anderson Co., Ky. He must have moved around some during his life. Dr. Rodgers served in the Civil War as an Asst-Surgeon (rank of Major), 11th Ky. (U.S.) Cavalry. Dr. John F. Rodgers, Asst. Surgeon. Enrolled in 11th Ky Cav. 9/18/1862, Mustered in 6/22/1863 for 3 years at Louisville, KY.. Listed on roll of Field Officers and Staff. Remarks say: Discharged to date from appointment. I have seen his record, and if I remember correctly he was discharged in 1863 for refusinig to join the Union Army. By this, I think that perhaps he was only contracted to be a civilian Doctor assigned to the 11th Ky U.S. Cav. or that it either meant he did not want to re-enlist or refused to leave the State of Kentucky and make war on his fellow Southerners. Perhaps riding with yankee criminals he realized that it was just a war of aggression, rapine, theft, and subjugation on the yankees' part and wanted nothing more to do with the damned yankee bastards! Info on the 11th Ky Cav: The 11th Ky Cav. skirmished with the enemy at Greasy Creek on the Cumberland River in Ky. Was in on the chase of Rebel Raider John Hunt Morgan and was instrumental in his capture in Ohio. Company "E" fought Gen. Morgan at Hartsville, Tenn. and was captured there. The Regiment was with General Burnside in the East Tennessee Campaign. They had a big battles and skirmishes at Philadelphia, Tenn., Maryville, Tenn., Siege of Knoxville, Tenn., Beans Station, Tenn., Dandridge, Tenn., Fairgarden, Tenn.. They went with General Burbridge on a raid to Saltville, Va.. They rode with General Stoneman during Sherman's move on Atlanta, Ga., having battles & skirmishes at Dalton, Cassville, New Hope Church, Acworth, Big Shanty, Powder Springs, Moore's Bridge, Campbelltown, Macon, Sunshine Church, all in Georgia. They rode again in the winter of 1864 to Saltville and Marion, Va. with General Stoneman. Having battles at both places. In the spring of 1865 they went with Stoneman on his raid into North Carolina, and from there the 11th went on into South Carolina and back into Georgia, hunting for Jeff Davis. They were mustered out of service in Louisville, Ky. In between the above campaigns, the 11th was used to scout and chase down guerillas in Kentucky. See Obituary below: Dona Wilson (Teasurer of the Woodford County Historical Society) graciously e-mailed me on 8/1/02 and again on 8/2/02 with some info on Dr. Rodgers. Here is the first note dated 8/1/02: "Hello David, I saw your query on the Woodford County GENWEB site. Dr. J. F. Rodgers b. 12 Jun 1830 - d. 14 Sep 1902 - is buried in the Versailles Cemetery. JOHN FLEMING RODGERS; B. 6/12/1830 in either Bourbon Co., Ky. or Franklin Co., Ky--D. 10/14/1902 at his home in Clifton, Ky. and buried in Versailles Cemetery (Section B3, Lot # 418, Grave # 10) in Versailles, Ky. after a Stroke left him paralyized for the last two years of his life. His obit says he was born in Bourbon Co., but a researcher said he had seen Dr. Rodgers' either his birth or marriage certificate andit said he was born in Franklin Co.. Served in the Civil War as an Asst-Surgeon (rank of Major), 11th Ky. U.S. Cavalry. He enlisted in late 1862 and was discharged in 1863 for having refused to join the Union Army. Perhaps he had Southern sympathies. Buried in "Versailles Cemetery", near Versailles, Ky. and his home in Clifton. He lived in Clifton, Woodford Co., Ky. the last 28 years of his life. The 1860 census has him in Lawrenceburg, Anderson Co., Ky.. Note: Acording to Dr. F.Terry Hambrecht, M.D., Senior Technical Advisor to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, 14015 Manorvale Road, Rockville, MD 20853 (301-460-3009), Dr. John Fleming Rodgers recieved his M.D. Degree from Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinatti, Oh. in 1855. He must have moved around some during his life. (see above notes on Dr. Rodgers). POSSIBLE FORMER OR FIRST WIFE OF DR. JOHN F. RODGERS (Info sent to me by Susan Cieply. See note immediatley below): -m-Married on Dec. 22, 1853 in Frankfurt, Franklin Co., Ky.. MARGARET E. PATTIE, B. 11/14/1837--d. ??. According to Susan Cieply, Margaret's parents were William S. Pattie, (2/19/1810--12/30/1883), and Mary Jane Smart, (3/23/1818--d11/27/1877), both born in Ky. William and Mary were married on 12/17/1835. ISSUE: 1. Mary Jane Rodgers, b. Ky. 1856-m-George P. Smith 2. Almira "Allie" Vaughn Rodgers, b. Ky. in 1865-m- 3. Fannie Thomas Rodgers, b. Ky. 1869-70-m-Mr. Greenwood. NOTE: I met Susan Cieply on the internet at a genealogy Discussion Forum. She said that a Dr. John F. Rodgers from Frankfurt, Ky. married Margaret E. Pattie, born 11/14/1837, on 12/22/1853 in Franklin, Ky. (see census records above). This Dr. Rodgers and Margert E. Pattie had Mary Jane, Almirea "Allie" Vaughn, Fannie Thomas, and perhaps other children. The mother and children, or at least the three girls mentioned, moved to Texas. One of the girls' obituary has them there in the 1920s. Although no sons were mentioned, John W. Rodgers, Sr. said that his dad said that he had some half-siblings he had never met or seen. Part of a note/e-mail, mentioning Margaret Pattie's siblings and the children of Dr. John F. and Margaret E. (Pattie) Rodgers,, sent by Susan Cieply: "Dave, I can actually contribute here. William and Mary Jane are Margaret's parents. Since she married Dr. Rodgers in 1853, she was already out of the house. The John below was my great grandfather. William S. Pattie (2/19/1810-12/30/1883) m Mary Jane Smart (3/23/1818-11/27/1877) on 12/17/1835. Margaret E. Pattie was born 11/14/1837-? ..Mary Louise Pattie(10/11/1839-6/26/1923) and Lucy Phenton (12/4/1842-11/14/1922) never married and stayed in Frankfort. Dr. Coleman Daniel Pattie (10/18/1844-1/22/1926)-m- Emma Crockett (10/14/1847-10/2/1932) and ended up in Richmond, KY. John Henry Pattie (7/8/1847-4/4/1891) m Sallie J. Richardson (12/14/1846-8/1/1889) stayed in Frankfort. Annie Pattie (8/22/1849-7/2/1933) m Frank H. McMahon (4/1/1850-1/1/1914) on 6/15/1870 and ended up in TX. This is the sister that I think ended up with Margaret and John's daughters in TX. Now, I know that Mary Jane Rodgers, Margaret's oldest, married a George R. Smith and Fannie Thomas Rodgers married a Mr. Greenwood, but I don't know if they stayed in TX or what. Susan." 2ND WIFE OF DR. JOHN FLEMING RODGERS: -M- SARAH ISABEL WILLIAMS, B. ?? in Kentucky--Died ??: Birth and Death date is not for certain. According to the Ky Death Records on KyGenWeb there was a Belle Glass (Belle Rodgers remarried a Glass after Dr. Rodgers died) who died at age 69 in Anderson on 7/20/1932. This puts that Belle as being born in 1863, which would make her 17 yrs old in 1880, the same age as the "Sallie Belle Rodgers" on the 1880 census then living with Dr. Rodgers. Probably the same person. Sarah Isabel Williams was the 2nd wife of Dr. Rodgers, known as "Belle". The family all called her "Ma Belle". She remarried a Mr. R. M. (Robert I think) Glass after Dr. Rodgers died. Lester her son corresponded with someone named Julius Glass, some kin to Belle Glass I am sure, perhaps a son or step son, nephew or whatever, or perhaps her new husband or something. She is possibly the "Sallie Belle Rodgers" listed with the Dr. on the 1880 Woodford Co., Ky. Census. If so, then she was born around 1863. The first wife and their several children unknown for sure. ISSUE: 1. Lena "Lee" Rodgers, b. (?)-- (Deathdate is unsure, but some info on the KyGenWeb said she died 7/20/1951 in Franklin/Anderson, Ky.) -m-Mr. Oscar Keith Hawkins, b. (?)--(Death info came from same source as his wife Lee's) D. 3/13/1959 in Franklin/Anderson, Ky. Postcards dated around 1932 to and from Lena and her brother Lester were postmarked to Mrs. O. K. Hawkins, Lawrenceburg, Ky.. Lester called her "Lea". Issue: (A) Oscar Fleming Hawkins-m-Connie Brandon, (B) Ruby Hawkins-m-Mallie M. Honaker. One source says that "Lea" and Oscar lived in Pikesville, Ky. possibly around 1929. 2. Emma Rodgers -m-Thomas O. Blackerby, Sr.; issue: (A) Thomas O. Blackerby, Jr. -m-(?); issue: (A1) Thomas Blackerby III. (B) Dorathy Blackerby, b. 1912 in Bloomfield, Ky., Died March/April, 2003 in Montgomery, Alabama. They were in Nelson Co., Ky. in 1910. Some old post cards have Emma and Thomas in 1912 and as late as 1917 in Taylorville, Ky.. they evidently movd around a lot such as Dorathy being born in Bloomfield, Ky. in 1912. But eventually moved to Montgomery, Alabama, living there for the remainder of their lives. Their descendants still live there now. I have only spoken to one or two on the phone. 3. *Lester Samuel Rodgers, b. 9/30/1887 in Decatur Co., Indiana--d. 1954 in Montgomery Ala., V.A. Hospital. Buried in Prattville-m-Maude Janet White, b. 10/12/1892--d. 6/25/1985(see below). II. LESTER SAMUEL RODGERS, B. 9/27/1887 in Decatur County, Indiana---D. 1954 in Veterans' Hospital in Montgomery, Ala.. He spent most of his life in Kentucky, the last 20 or so years of his life in Prattville, Ala.. He was a WWI Veteran: Enlisted in U.S. Navy at Mare Island, Cal., on 4/18/1917. Discharged in 4/17/1920-22; served aboard the U.S.S. "Pueblo". NOTE: As mentioned above, he had an Uncle Nick and an Aunt Sallie in Selma, Ala. . There was an Aunt Emmette in Mason Ohio in 1913 and an Aunt "R." or "B." (bad handwriting) mentioned living in Midway, Ky. in 1911. I have no idea how they were related to him. See obituary below. -M- MAUDE JANET WHITE, B. 10/12/1892, Marion, N.C.--D. 6/25/1985, Prattville, Ala.. They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetary in Prattville.
