Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of David and
Ada McKinney Rice, now of Mercer County.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by two daughters, Jennifer May Hale and Sherry Rice
Sanders; three sisters, Jamie Riley, Rebecca Tingle, and Rubena
Searcy; three brothers, David Rice Jr., Justus Rice, and Patrick Ellis Rice, all of Mercer County, and several nieces and
nephews.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home,
Versailles. Interment was in the Rose Crest Cemetery, Versailles.
Casket bearers were David Rice, Justus Rice, Patrick Rice, Anthony Rice, Joseph Sanders, and Mitchell Searcy.

Edna Lynn Hancock, 86, formerly of Midway, widow of James Clark “J.C.” Hancock, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at the Taylor Manor Nursing
Home, Versailles. Born in Woodford County Nov. 13, 1915, she was the daughter of the late
John Alvin and Margaret Conyers Lynn. She was an active member of the
Midway Baptist Church and a member of the Woodburn Homemakers Club. She was a retired employee of the Peoples Federal Savings and Loan,
Lexington, and was a former Midway Post Office employee. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Risque Atwood, Lexington; a
sister, Ethel Maye, Lexington; a granddaughter, Marcia Sims; a grandson, Darrell Atwood; three great grandchildren, Mandy Loftis, and
Megan and McKenzie Sims; and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Lena Littrell, and a brother, Claude Lynn, are deceased.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Duell-Clark Funeral Home, Versailles, by the Rev. Greg Hancock
and the Rev. Mark Johnson. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers will be Darrell Atwood, Mark Sims, Brent

Thomas of Richmond, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at her daughter's home. Born in Jessamine County, she was a daughter of the late William and
Catherine Johnson Rowe. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a sister, Margaret
Polk, Versailles; three grandchildren, Robert Anthony Harris, Lawrence,
Kansas; Richard Alan Harris, Columbus, Ohio, and Leann Hicks, El Paso, Texas; nine great-grandchildren, Casey, Mariah, Kristin, Monique,
Zenobia, William, Richard Jr., Logan, and Maria; and several nieces and nephews. A son, William R. Harris Jr., is deceased.
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles. Interment followed in the Steele

Willie Bee Harris, 91, of Woodford County, widow of Tigue Harris, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at her home. She was born in Lexington, the
daughter of the late Will and Mary Hayes. She was a member of Polk Memorial Baptist Church in Mortonsville, which she attended faithfully
as long as her health permitted. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Louise Coles, Cincinnati, Ohio;
three grandchildren, Tina Coles, Teresa Derden, and
Darryl Coles; six great-grandchildren, Marion, Brandon, Tinia, Kellea, Tinia, and Brelan;
a brother, Thomas Moore, and a several nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at the Polk Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Donald Townsend. Interment was in the Steele
Cemetery, Versailles. Casket bearers were Wayne Bradley, Carl Morton, Russell Higgins, Jeff Derden, David Carter, and David Rawlings. The

Charles C. Hartley, 74, of Frankfort, husband of Helen Nickles Hartley, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, from injuries received in a vehicle
accident. A native of Woodford County, he was the son of the late Clifford and
Mary Waters Hartley.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary H. Simpson and Ann Rutledge, both of Frankfort; four sons, Joseph Hartley,
Indianapolis, Ind., and Michael, Clifford, and Steven Hartley, all of Frankfort; a sister, Alene Howard, Versailles; two brothers, James
Hartley, Versailles, and Sonny Hartley, Lexington; 16 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Services were conducted Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military honors
conducted by VFW Post 4075. Casket bearers were Jay, Jamie, David, John, and Jessica Hartley, and Robie Mitchell. Honorary bearers were
Bill Durrett, Joe Karsner, Don McCormick, Sonny Adkins, Danny Simpson, Mark
Rutledge, and Hope Hartley.

Mrs. Isham Hawkins, aged 81, quietly passed away on Mnday, Feb. 5th, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Burns. The funeral took place Friday, when Rev. Virgil Gaines made a few
appropriate remarks, and the remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Frankfort.
Mrs. Hawkins leaves five children - Messrs. Clint and Thos. Hawkins of near Midway, Mrs. John
Miles, Frankfort, Mrs. Susie Fogg, Lexington, and Mrs. Burns, Millville. We tender to them our
sincere sympathy.

A native of Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Carrie Blair McNeece.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Bush, Lexington; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Bailey and Hennrietta McMenema, both of Lexington.

Roberts and the late Nell Roberts. Born June 8, 1948, in Lexington, she had moved to Vero Beach from New
Philadelphia, Ohio, one and one-half years ago.
Surviving, in addition to her grandfather, are her husband of thirty years, William A. High, Vero Beach; her parents, Earl and Bonnie
Roberts, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a sister, Bonnie Primozich, Salem, Ore; and a brother, John W. Roberts, Springfield, Ohio. Services were
conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in Florida. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 7, in the Versailles
Cemetery, with the Rev. Rick Powell officiating. The family will receive friends at the family home, 328 Amsden Avenue, Versailles,

Holt. He was a retired sergeant of the U.S. Army and a veteran of World
War II and Korea. He retired from the Lexington Army Depot in 1974. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Carol Lyons,

Virgil D. Howe, 94, of 306 McDonald Drive, Versailles, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the home of a daughter in Lexington.
Born in Woodford County, Mr. Howe lived in Owen County for a number of years prior to returning to Versailles several years ago. He was a
Baptist, and was the widower of Emma LaFoe, who died in September. The Howes had been married for over 63 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Pratt, Viper, Donna Buckles, Lexington; four grandchildren, Angela Guiser, Dina Skaggs, Bradley
Pratt, Michael Pratt; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher Harris, Matthew Guiser, and Katie Guiser.
Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, by Chaplain Craig Ryan. Interment was

James. A native of Louisville, he was the son of Porter and Bea Henderson James, of Versailles, and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife and parents; a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Christine James, of Georgetown; a daughter and son-in-law,
Becki and Daryl Casey, of Frankfort; and a grandson, Austyn Lee James, of Georgetown.

Agnes Johnson, daughter of the late Charlie and Elizabeth Woolums died Monday, February 22, 1999 in Tacoma Washington. Her husband, Howard
Johnson died in 1991. Mrs. Johnson was born in 1915 and is survived by two sons; Deward
Johnson of Tacoma and Revel Johnson of Holdenville, Ok; a half brother,
Carlos Sams of Millville and seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews including Barbara Todd Roark
of Woodford Co, Ky and Bill Davis Todd and Charlene Todd Wethington of Woodford Co.
Mr and Mrs Johnson lived on and operated many Woodford Co, Kentucky
farms. They lived on and operated the W C McCauley Farm from 1947 to 1981 and then moved to Tacoma after that time.
Both are interred in Fir Lane Memorial Park, Spanaway, Washington.

A Good Man
Death of James C. Johnson, One of Woodford’s Prominent Citizens
James C. Johnson, one of Woodford County’s best and most popular citizens, died Monday afternoon
at 3:30 o’clock at his home on the McCracken’s Turnpike,
near Millville, after an illness of nearly two months. The funeral was held at the residence yesterday morning at 10 o’clock, the services being
conducted by the Rev. J.T. McGlothlin. There was a very large attendance of friends and many
beautiful floral tributes. The burial took place in the cemetery
at Frankfort. The pall-bearers were D.L. Thornton, A.B. Scott, D.E. Watts, M.B. Hifner, Judge E. Mulcahy and Geo. S. Byrns, of
Lexington.
James Clelland Johnson was born in Woodford County Feb. 4th, 1844, and was the third son of
Jacob and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Johnson. His paternal grandfather, Isaac Johnson, came to this
county from Virginia. He was reared on a farm. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Confederate
army, in Co. A., (Campbell’s company) 5th Kentucky Cavalry, and served throughout the Civil War.
He was wounded at Lebanon, KY, in Morgan’s fight with Hanson. Mr. Johnson married, August 15th,
1872, Miss Mary Willis, daughter of W.C. and Georgianna (Holloway) Willis, of this county. His
wife, four daughters, Mrs. Frank Watts, Mrs. B.E. Schramme, of Frankfort; Misses Hettie and Yeba
Johnson, and three sons, J. Clelland Johnson, of Ocala, Fla., Marion F. and J. Cantrill Johnson,
survive him. He leaves one brother, Price Johnson, of this county.
Mr. Johnson was a man and citizen of the truest type, of unswerving integrity, kind, courteous,
hospitable with a strong love for his fellow men. He was held in warm esteem by everyone who
knew him. Nearly all his life he was engaged in farming. For several years, and at the time of
his death, he was a member of the County Board of Education. He had long been a member of the
Baptist Church and was a member of the Abe Buford Camp, U.C.F.

and Ellen Sutherland Kaenzig. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stephen
Kaenzig, Flemingsburg; a daughter, Janet Kaenzig, Paducah; a granddaughter,
Chelsea Kaenzig, Flemingsburg; a sister, Lucy Myshrall, Hartford, Conn.; three brothers, Joseph Kaenzig, Dayton, Ohio, and Charles
Kaenzig and Claude Kaenzig, both of Versailles. A sister and two brothers are deceased.
Services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Boone-Nickell
Funeral Home. Burial was in Carlisle Cemetery with military rites by
the American Legion and VFW posts of Flemingsburg.

Viola Tribble Kindred, 107, of Lexington, widow of Henry D. Kindred, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Taylor Manor, Versailles.
Mrs. Kindred was born in 1893 in Garrard County. Her family (Tribble) was among the first settlers in Kentucky. She graduated from Lancaster
High School, to which she traveled by horse and buggy. She attended Eastern State Teachers College, then taught in a one-room school In
Garrard County. She and her family also formerly lived in Versailles.She is survived by two sons, J. L. Kindred and Dow Kindred, both of

Freda Duncan Klein, 75, of Versailles, widow of Herman Walter Klein, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
Born in Filer, Idaho, April 26, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Blanche Duncan Blastock. She was a retired records clerk with the Lexington Police Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharron Klein, Versailles; and a grandson, Sean Allen Klein, Lexington.
Services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Duell-Clark Funeral Chapel, Versailles, by Chaplain Mike Harris. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery. Casket bearers were John Richardson, Sean Klein, Scott McClain, and Scott Lee.

James Bond Lewis Jr. , 54, formerly of Versailles, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Town and Country Hospital, Tampa, Fla.
A native of Woodford County, he retired from Lexmark after being diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Jane Lewis, Odessa, Fla.; a daughter, Jessica Lynn Eary, Lexington; three sons, James Todd Lewis,
Lexington, John Edward Southworth, Lawrenceburg, and Robert Lewis Southworth, Paris; seven grandchildren, Jordan Eary, Megan Eary,
Jessica Lee Southworth, Sydney Erin Grace Southworth, Joshua Whitner Lewis

Southworth; and a brother, Donnie McGohon, Odessa.Mr. Lewis was well-known for his fascination with history and nature;

strong will to live life to the fullest. There was no service. His remains were cremated and interment will be
