Fannie Marcum, 80, of Versailles, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at the University of Kentucky A. B. Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.
A native of Owsley County, she was the daughter of the late John and Sophia Rice Marcum.
She is survived by three sons, Pearl Marcum, Indiana; Riley Rice Marcum, Mississippi, and Ronald Marcum Baker, Florida, and four 
grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Versailles Cemetery by Pastor Burt Paden. The Duell-Clark Funeral 
Chapel, Versailles, was in charge of arrangements.

James Henry Mason, 79, of Midway, widower of Lorene Adell Games Mason, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in the same room in which he was born, after a long illness.
Born in Midway Sept. 14, 1922, he was the son of the late Daniel and Lillie Mae Williamson Mason. 
Survivors include four daughters, Henrietta Coomes, Lexington, Jeraldine Purvis, Lawrenceburg, Marilyn Driskell, Versailles, and Edna Marie Bowling, 
Shelbyville; a sister, Edna Mason Purvis, Frankfort; a brother, Dan Mason Jr., Lexington; 19 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and a special granddaughter, Sydney Burton. A 
daughter, Caroline Mason Robinson; a grandson, James Ellis Coomes; a granddaughter, Rebecca Purvis; and a great grandson, J.C. Hill, are deceased.
Services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the Duell-Clark Funeral Chapel, Versailles. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers were his grandsons.

Katherine Jane English "Kasey" Mason, 87, Versailles, who operated Mason Antiques on Lexington Road for 42 years before retiring in 
October 1998, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001. Mrs. Mason, widow of James Mason, resided at 942 Huntertown Road.
A Richmond native who moved to Woodford County with her family when she was 5 years old, Mrs. Mason began working at an early age, including a 
part-time position at The Woodford Sun folding newspapers. At 17, she quit school to go to work for F. S. Marshall & Co., a Versailles 
department store, but continued to learn through extensive reading, and eventually began creating custom handmade drapes and slip covers, 
having been taught to sew by an aunt.Newly married, and with World War II on the horizon, she entered 
factory employment, working for Irving Air Chute in Lexington until her husband’s induction into the service. She joined him in Alabama and, at 
a branch of Maxwell Air Force Base, became a parachute rigger.After the war, she set up a table for parachute rigging at the Bohmer 
Flying Service at Blue Grass Field in Lexington, and returned to making custom draperies and slip covers until the Korean War brought her back 
to war work. At Irving she was a production manager, responsible for interviewing and training employees to work with the nylon canopies for 
parachutes. She also worked briefly for a blouse factory here before opening her own shop.
Mrs. Mason, daughter of the late Thomas and Katherine Elizabeth Carmack English, was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and was active 
in civic work during her business career. She is survived by two sisters, Edith Wash and Betty Devers, both of 
Phoenix, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews. Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Duell-Clark 
Funeral Chapel, Versailles. Burial was in the Versailles Cemetery. Active casket bearers were Dennis Blaise, Ray Harm Jr., Robert 
Brumback, Paul Downey, Ben Barnes, and Eddie Sidden.

Robert T. McClain, 79, of Woodford County, widower of Barbara Marcum McClain, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Woodford County Aug. 13, 1922, he was the son of the late T. Burns and Viola Gregory McClain. He was a member of the Midway 
Presbyterian Church. Survivors include four daughters, Susan Franklin, Woodford County, Faye 
Earleen Spencer, Midway, Patricia McClain, Lexington, and Sharon Hutcherson, Lawrenceburg; a son, Russell Burns McClain, Versailles; 
three sisters, Martha Downs, Nicholasville, Elizabeth Marcum, Versailles, and Joyce Covert, Fairfield, Ohio; two brothers, Rex 
McClain, Lexington, and David McClain, Frankfort; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. A son, Robert Thomas McClain Jr., is deceased.
Services were conducted Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Duell-Clark Funeral Chapel, Versailles. Entombment was in Blue Grass Memorial 
Gardens. Casket bearers were Mr. McClain’s grandsons.

Kenton Tyler McCourt, 23, of Elkhorn Drive, Ironworks Estates, Georgetown, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2001, following an automobile 
accident on U.S. 460 in Scott County.  A native of Frankfort, he was employed with the Frankfort State Journal 
and was a graduate of Frankfort High School.  Survivors include his father, Lowell Albert McCourt, of Georgetown; his 
mother, Ann Bibble Lamden, of Red Deer, Canada; a brother, Brett Albert McCourt, of Georgetown; a sister, Meghan Aileen McCourt, of Georgetown; 
and a grandmother, Mrs. Raymond Bibble, of Frankfort.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Harrod 
Bros. Memorial Chapel in Frankfort.  Burial will be in the family lot in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in 
Woodford County.  Casket bearers will be Brady McCourt, Brian McCourt, Chris McCourt, 
Nick Barton, Paul Thompson and Nathan Lee.

JoAnn Bryant McCubbins, 66, of 14 Queen Avenue, Lexington, retired Kentucky Finance payroll clerk, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at St. 
Joseph Hospital, Lexington. Born in Fayette County, she was the daughter of John Bryant of Louisville and the late Lucille Montgomery 
Bryant.  In addition to her father, she is survived by three daughters, Donna Fyffe, Vickie Northcutt, and Nita Barboza, all of Lexington; three 
sons, Steve McCubbins, Mark McCubbins, and John McCubbins, all of Lexington; two brothers; eleven grandchildren; and two 
great-grandchildren. A son, Tommy McCubbins, is deceased.Services and interment were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Blue 
Grass Memorial Gardens, Jessamine County. Casket bearers were Steve, John, and Mark McCubbins, Todd Barboza, Randy Northcutt, and William

Born in Woodford County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Jennie Clark Flora. 
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Armstrong, Indiana; a son, Pete McDaniel, Versailles; eight grandchildren, Pete, Kevin, Krissy, Angela, 
and Shannon McDaniel, Jason Guess, Stephanie Howard, Lindsey Armstrong; and one great grandchild. A son, Frankie McDaniel, is deceased.
Services were conducted Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home by the Rev. Joe Girdler. Interment was in the Versailles 
Cemetery. Casket bearers were Bobby Curtsinger, Kevin McDaniel, Pete McDaniel, Lynn Rice, Chad Drake, and Mike Devore.

McKenzie - John H. McKenzie who fell from the third story of the Armstrong Hotel, Shelbyville, Monday night, March 11, in his sleep, died from the injuries at his 
home in Versailles, March 17. Tetanus developed Saturday and was the immediate cause of Mr. McKenzie's death. The deceased was one of the foremost citizens
of Versailles. He was senior member of the firm of J.H. McKenzie & Son, and was also salesman for Central Kentucky for the international Harvester Co. 
He was born in Jessamine county, March 16, 1842. He served throughout the Civil War in the Confederate army, and was a member of the famous Orphan Brigade. 
Mr. McKenzie located in Versailles after the close of the war. He served for a great many years as a member of the Board of Council of Versailles, and was 
also mayor of the city for several terms. Mr. McKenzie's wife died five years ago.  He leaves one son, Edward McKenzie. He was a brother of the late Jas. M.McKenzie, 
of Nicholasville. Funeral services were held at St. Leo's Catholic church, Monday afternoon. Rev.Fr. Geo. C. Bealer officiating. The remains were interred 
in the Versailles Cemetery.

Jeffrey Van McKinney, 46, of Versailles, husband of Pam Krajewski McKinney, father of Katherine Ann, Kyle Van, and Matthew Christian 
McKinney, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec 1, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.  He was the son of Earl and Carolyn McKinney, Lexington.
McKinney was the owner of McKinney Painting, Versailles, and was chairman of the Woodford County Economic Development Authority.
Born in Huntington, W. Va., he was a 1973 graduate of Tates Creek High School, Lexington, and attended the University of Kentucky. 
In addition to his wife, children, and parents, he is survived by three sisters, Lynda Williams, Jill Jones, and Paige Torres; a brother, Keith 
McKinney; his grandmother, Edna Hobbs; his mother-in-law, Reg Krajewski; a sister-in-law, Jan Klimper; a brother-in-law, Mark 
Krajewski; aunts and uncles, Oral and Betty McKinney, Harold and Barbara McKinney, Lynda and Charlie Hollan, Darryl Hobbs, and Charles

Joe Craft, Robert P. McMenama Jr., Kathy Lupher, Kelly Sexton, and Karren Gess, all of Lexington; 14 great grandchildren; and two great

John R. Middleton, 75, of 105 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Versailles, husband of Susie H. Middleton, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at the 
Frankfort Medical Center.  Born in Woodford County on March 13, 1925, he was the son of the late 
Arementa Phillips and Arthur W. Middleton.  Mr. Middleton was a retired Texas Instruments employee, a member of 
Versailles First Baptist Church, and was a civil rights leader here.  Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Therese R. Wilkerson, 
of Virginia; three sons, Jose J. Middleton, Versailles, Richard W. Middleton, Louisville, and Timothy F. Middleton, Frankfort; his 
stepmother, Ellea Middleton, Louisville; and six grandchildren. A daughter, Pamela Lundy, is deceased.
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at the Versailles First Baptist Church by the Rev. Floyd Greene. Burial was in the Steele 
Cemetery, Versailles. Casket bearers were Victor Brown, Herbert Bush, David Lilly, Robert Lilly, Vincent Lilly, Robert Maxberry, Russell

Nellie Long Mitchell, 88, of Midway, wife of Warren Mitchell, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center.
Born in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late William and Jeanette Long. She was a 55-year resident of Midway.
In addition to her husband of 71 years, she is survived by a daughter, Barbara M. Jones, Frankfort; three sisters, Alma Mitchell, Midway, and 
Marie Crittenden and Mary K. Hockensmith, both of Frankfort; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. A daughter, Lois June 
Mitchell, five sisters, and two brothers are deceased.  Services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at the 
Duell-Clark Funeral Chapel, Versailles. Burial was in the Midway Cemetery. Casket bearers were Sonny Jones, Tim Jones, Richard Jones,

Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews.Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Taylor Manor.

Born in Woodford County, she was a lifelong member of the Versailles Presbyterian Church. She was the daughter of the late John William and 
Mirtie Shryock Curtis.  Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Tucker, Versailles; three sons,

She was the daughter of Georgia Bell Howard, stepdaughter of Leroy Howard, and daughter of the late John William Mulder. 
Also surviving are three brothers, William Mulder, Maurice Mulder, and James Mulder; three sisters, Mae Mulder, Patricia Howard, and Sissy 
Fisher, all of Versailles; and a number of nieces and nephews. A brother, Robert Mulder, is deceased.

William "Billy" Morgan Mullin, 78, of Fishers Mill Road, Midway, husband of Mary Wynn Mullin, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at his home. 
A native of Scott County, he was the son of the late Walter and Nancy Graves Mullin. He was a retired farmer and Trane Company employee and was a member of the White Sulphur Baptist Church. 
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Brenda Childers; a son, Billy Mullin Jr.; and three grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, and Merideth Mullin. A granddaughter, Niki Childers, 
and a sister, Louise Mitchell, are deceased.  Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 20, at Johnson’s Funeral Home by 
Bro. John D. Cravens. Burial will be in the Midway Cemetery. Memorials may be made to White Sulphur Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Born in Liberty, he was the son of the late Raymond and Rethie Long Murphy.Mr. Murphy was a retired 37-year employee of the Kentucky State Police, 
where he had served as communications coordinator and dispatcher. He was a member of the Clear Creek Baptist Church, Woodford County, a 
charter member of the Hodgenville Jaycees, and was a Kentucky Colonel and U.S. Army veteran. His family included some of the founding fathers 
of Byrdstown, Tenn.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Leisa M. Dobson, Prattville, Ala.; two sisters, Perlina Anderkin, Mt. Vernon, and 
Margaret Roark, Lexington; a brother, Ray Murphy, Nicholasville; a grandchild, Kaelyn Dobson, and several nieces and nephews. A sister, 
Hazel Murphy, and a brother, Bobby Murphy, are deceased.Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Duell-Clark

Carl A. Nelson, 75, of Lexington, formerly of Versailles, widower of Audrey Gardner Nelson, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Homestead 
Nursing Center in Lexington.  Born in Lathrop, Mo., he was the son of the late Carl A. and Minnie L. 
Nelson. He was a retired painter and had been a Lexington Herald-Leader carrier. Mr. Nelson was a member of the National Rifle Association and 
was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.  He is survived by five daughters, Audrey Craig, Lexington; Connie 
Nunnelley, Versailles; Sandy Miller, Donna Nelson, and Lisa Ballard; three sons, George Smock, Corinth; Steven Nelson and Ronnie Nelson; a 
brother Glen Nelson; and four grandchildren. A brother, Stanley Nelson, and two sons, Mark Alan Nelson and Charles Smock, are deceased.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Versailles Cemetery by the Rev. Frank Osburg. The Duell-Clark Funeral

Born in Jessamine County, he was the son of Elsie B. Nichols of Versailles and the late Robert Nichols. He was a member of the Ebenezer 
Church of Christ, Salvisa, and was an employee of Seligman Distributors, Frankfort, where he was a truck driver and warehouseman.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three daughters, Carol Nichols and Tricia Wright, both of Versailles, and Brenda 
Spencer, Lawrenceburg; three sons, Duane Nichols, Versailles, Darren Nichols and Thomas Garrison, both of Frankfort; a brother, Ronnie 
Nichols, Versailles; and 14 grandchildren.  Services were conducted Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at the Blackburn & Ward 
Funeral Home, Versailles, by the Rev. Gary Maynard and the Rev. John Kessel. Interment was in Rose Crest Cemetery. Casket bearers were Troy

Kaye Walker, Frankfort, and Christine Little, Jackson; three sons, Willis O'Neal, Norman O'Neal, and Gary O'Neal, all of Versailles; a 
step daughter, Wilma Lee Hughes of Millstone; two sisters, Mariam Camp and Ann O'Neal, both of Georgia; 32 grandchildren; and
21 great grandchildren. A son, Curtis Wayne O'Neal, and a brother, Clyde O'Neal, are deceased.

She was the daughter of the late James and Martha Elkin Redfearn, of   Lexington.

Herbert Russell Parrish, 77, of Lexington, died suddenly Thursday, March 20, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was the husband of Alice Elizabeth VanOrden Parrish.
A native of Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Matthew and Gueneviere Parrish. He was the retired fire chief for Neptune, N.J., and a member of the fire police and fire department for Monmouth 
County, N.J.Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sharon Parrish, of Georgetown; a son, Russell Parrish, of 
Jackson, N.J.; a granddaughter, Madison Parrish; a sister-in-law, Edith (Don) Brandenburg, of Lexington; and three brothers-in-law, Bill VanOrden, of California, and John and Danny VanOrden, 
both of New Jersey.  Funeral services were held Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Johnson;s Funeral Home with the Rev. W.C.

Harding, Lexington, and Hallie Jordon, Ohio; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. A son, Robert Warren Patterson; a sister, Phoebe Howard; three 
brothers, Virgil, Wheeler, and Caywood Coyle, and four grandchildren, Billy Patterson, Dorothy Lee Nichols, Jeffrey Lucas Patterson, and Jennifer Lynn Patterson, are deceased.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Duell-Clark Funeral Chapel, Versailles, by the Rev. Don Flanigan. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Woodford

DIES AT 100 YEARS
Daniel Patterson, Formerly of Woodford, Succumbs to Pneumonia  Daniel Patterson died Tuesday night at his home in Anderson county, after a short illness of 
pneumonia. Monday was his 100th birthday anniversary.  Mr. Patterson lived in Woodford county many years ago, on a farm in Clover Bottom. His wife, the 
late Mrs. Anne Munday Patterson, taught school in the Clover Bottom district. He was born in a log house two miles from Harrodsburg, next to the oldest of 11 children, eight 
sons and three daughters, all of whom lived to old age. One of Mr. Patterson’s brothers, John V. Patterson, of Nonesuch,died four years ago at the age of 92. The three 
sisters and two brothers, Robert Patterson, of Idaho, and Richard Patterson, of Mercer county, are living. The sisters 
are: Mrs. Fin Vanarsdall, 92, Louisville; Mrs. Kate Sanders,Harrodsburg, and Margaret Hickerson, Idaho, both past 80. Also surviving are two daughters.
Mr. Patterson was a well-informed man and an interesting talker. He had been a member of the Christian church for 84 years.The funeral will be held today.

Mrs. Sarah Preston Patterson, 86, widow of John V. Patterson, died early Monday morning at her home near Nonesuch, following an illness.
Mrs. Patterson was a native of Woodford county and had lived most of her life in the community where she died. One who had been her neighbor for 50 years, said he 
had never known a better Christian woman, a kinder neighbor than Mrs. Patterson. She was a member of the Christian church.
Surviving are one son, Omer Patterson, of Louisville; a stepson, William T. Patterson, of Woodford county, and several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday morning, at 10 o’clock, at the Ebenezer church, in Mercer county,and the burial was in the Ebenezer cemetery, 
beside the grave of Mrs. Patterson’s husband, who was born and reared in Mercer.

John L. Pierce, 72, of Versailles, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center, Lexington. He was the husband of the late Christine Crutchfield Pierce.
He was born in Louisville and was the son of the late John Thomas and Mary Mills Pierce. He was a retired Army veteran who served his country 
during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  Survivors include a daughter, Tina Jones; three sons, Allen Pierce, of Lexington, Mark Pierce, of Versailles, and

Midway, Dorothy Helen Lacefield, Harrodsburg, and Betty Woodrum, Jessamine County; two brothers, Armon Portwood, Midway, and James Portwood, Lexington; two grandchildren, 
Heather Nicole Portwood, Georgetown, and Ian Christopher Portwood, Danville; and two great grandsons, Joshua Ian Portwood and Jeremy Richard Portwood.
There were no services. The Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles, was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Chapman Prather, 77, of Campbellsburg, wife of William T. Prather Jr., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville.
A native of Versailles, she was the daughter of the late Virgil Lee and Louisa Williams Chapman. She was a member of the Campbellsburg First 
Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lynda Gerding, Louisville; a son, William T. Prather III, 
Owenton; a sister, Mary Lyle Hartley, Versailles; a brother, William H. Chapman, Versailles; and a granddaughter, Whitney Lyle Prather, 
Owenton.  Services were conducted Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Prewitt New Castle 
Funeral Home, New Castle, by the Rev. Russell Winn. Interment was in Rose Crest Cemetery. 
Graveside services were held Friday, Nov. 16, 2001.

 

Alfred Pulliam

Services for Alfred Pulliam, 82, will be at Harrod Bros Memorial Chapel Tuesday. Burial will be in the family lot at Frankfort Cemetery. He 
died at King's Daughters Memorial Hospital Saturday. He was the son of the late Josie Woolums Pulliam and William Pulliam.
Survivors are his wife, Annie Woolums Pulliam of Frankfort; two step daughters, Mrs Anna Belle Bryant and Mrs Margaret Bryant, both of 
Frankfort; three step sons, John Buffin, Arthur Buffin and Charles Buffin all of Frankfort; one sister; Mrs Julia Shelton of Lexington and 
three nieces and three nephews.Bearers will be John Buffin, Arthur Buffin, Charles Buffin, Bobby 
Buffin, Johnny Van, and Jack Thurman. 

Annie Pulliam

Services for Annie Woolums Pulliam, 91, will be 10:00 Thursday at 
Harrod Bros Memorial Chapel. She died Tuesday at Bluegrass Regional 
Medical Center. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. 
She was a native of Franklin Co, Ky and retired from Genesco after 48 
years of service.
Survivors include a son, Arthur Buffin of Frankfort; two daughters, 
Anna Bell Bryant and Margaret Bryant both of Frankfort; a brother, John 
Woolums of Frankfort; two sisters, Josephine Woolums and Dolly Dotson 
both of Frankfort; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 16 
great great grandchildren. 
She was the daughter of the late Richard Woolums and Maggie Hemway 
Woolums and the widow of Alfred Pulliam. She was also preceeded in 
death by two sons, John and Charles Buffin. 
Bearers will be Greg Van, Eddie Van, Barry Burton, Gary Conway, Paul 
Jackson, and David Allen Buffin.
