Ben B Scott

A Sad Death
His Mind Unbalanced by Ill Health, Ben B. Scott Suicides by Hanging Himself

His reason dethroned by continued ill health, Mr. Ben B. Scott committed suicide last Friday morning by hanging himself in the
barn on the farm of his brother, Mr. Al. B. Scott.  His body was found suspended from a rafter at about 11 o’clock.
Mr. Scott’s health had been steadily failing for several years. In August 1898 he sold out his livery business in Versailles and went to the country to
live with his brother in hopes that the change might benefit him. Instead, he grew worse and his despondency increased until it affected his mind.

The news of his sad and tragic death was received everywhere with the most profound sorrow, for there were few men more popular than Ben Scott,
and before he was stricken with ill health he was one of the most jovial of men, having always a cheery word for his friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Scott was born in Woodford County and, with the exception of a short time spent in Missouri, lived here all his life. He was formerly engaged
in farming. Some years ago he formed a partnership with Mr. G.R. Bohannan in the livery business at Midway, they afterward transferring the business to
Versailles. After their stable on the corner of Lexington and Locust Street burned in 1894 the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Scott continuing in
business at the same location until his health forced him to retire in 1898. He was one of the best liverymen the town every had, reliable and conscientious,
and a big-hearted genial man.

Mr. Scott was a Confederate soldier and serviced in Col. Breckinridge’s regiment, the Ninth KY, Co. A. He leaves three brothers – Albert B.,
of this county; Robert A., of Summer Haven, Fla.; and George R. Scott, Corsicana, Tex.

The funeral Sunday afternoon at the residence of Mr. A.B. Scott was attended by a large number of people. Services by Rev. G.H.
Rout and burial in the cemetery here.
