James Gough's will. He was born 14 February 1775 in St. Mary's Co., MD and died 24 May 1828 in Woodford Co. His wife was Rebecca Davis. I descend from his son Joseph Henry Gough

In the Name of God Amen I James Gough of Woodford County & State of Kentucky being weak of body but of sound and disposing mind & memory do make this my last will and testament as follows towit [sic], In the first place I commend my soul to God and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent manner at the discretion of my executors hereinafter appointed believing in its resurrection through the merits & mediation of our blessed savieor Jesus christ [sic] the only and all sufficient savieor [sic] as to the worldly estate with which it has pleased God to bless me it is my will first that my funeral expences [sic] and all my just debts be paid Secondly I will and bequeath unto my beloved wife Rebecca Gough the plantation on which I now reside supposed to contain about two hundred acres during her natural life in trust for her & for the support of herself & for the support and education of all my children & at her decease sd plantation to be sold by my said Executors on such credit as they may think proper & the money to be equally divided among all my children also I give and bequeath unto my said wife five negroes viz two men Tom & Petery and boy Jack & two women Fanny and Marilla during her natural life in trust to work the plantation for the support of herself & for the support & education of all my children & at her decease sd five negroes to be equally divided among all my children. I also give & bequeath unto my sd wife my Negroes Cela, Louisa [Lovisa?], Priscilla, Mathias, George, Elizabeth Mary & Milo in trust that she shall give to each of my children: Ann Matilda Gough, Susan Caroline Gough, Sylvester Gough, Joseph Henry Gough, George Churchill Gough, Benjamin Franklin Gough & Sarah Martha Gough as they may severally arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry their choice of the last named eight negroes or their increase or of the increase of the first named five negroes and in case the eight negroes & their increase & also the increase of the first five named negroes should not be sufficient to afford one to each of my children as above directed then each [such?] of my children as may not receive a negro as above directed or hereafter to be provided shall receive an equivalent in money I also give & bequeath unto my sd wife all my house and kitchen furniture farming utentials [sic] of every description & stock of all kinds during her natural life in trust for her support & for the support & education of all my children & at her decease to be sold & the money [illegible - probably something to the effect of "to be equally divided among all my children"] my will that so much of the live stock on the farm as my Executors may think not necessary for the present support of my family or to work the farm shall be sold by sd executors & the money applied to the payment of my debts or the support of my family It is also my will that each of my children shall receive of my sd wife a good horse saddle & bridle & such a portion of the live stock & of the household furniture as my sd wife may think proper to give & find convenient to spare It is my will that my sd Executors shall at some convenant [sic] time after my de[rest of word missing - either "death" or "decease"] sell in such manner as they may think proper my two negro men Wilson & Ralph & should the money arising from sale of sd two negroes be more than sufficient to pay all my debts the remainder to be applied by my said Executors to the support of my family or in the purchase of a young negro to aid in making out the legacies above named to all my children or the money to be part to interest as my sd executors may think shall be most for the interest of all my children Also I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my friends Samuel Malhol[rest of word missing - probably "Malholland" or "Mulholland"] & Andrew Muldron [Muldrow or Muldrew?] of Woodford County & Joshua Worley of Fayette Co[unty] Executors & my beloved wife Rebecca Gough Executrix of this my last will & testament hereby revoking all former wills & testaments by me made & declaring this to be my only & true last will & testament as witness my hand May 21st 1828.
