As an
architectural historian with the Alabama Historical Commission, I am
researching the background of a prominent early builder in Florence, a city
in far northwstern Alabama on the Tennessee River. The builder's name was
Thomas Crow and he lived in Adair County before coming down to Alabama in
the early 1830s. Thomas Crow's wife was Elizabeth Hooks (daughter of David
Hooks), and his parents were Thomas, Sr. and Nancy (Donnally) Crow. They
came to Kentucky from Botetourt County, Virginia.
Thomas Crow
was a superb craftsman and executed some of the finest Federal-style
woodwork left in the state of Alabama -- staircases, mantelpieces, elegant
panaled doors, etc. I have a suspicion that he may have apprenticed with an
early Adair County builder before coming to Alabama.
Do your
genealogical records contain anything on the Crow, Hooks or related
families? Or perhaps on early housebuilders and craftsmen of Adair County
-- probably in the 1810-1830 period? Any leads you can provide will be
greatly appreciated. Please respond to both my home address and my office
address (robert.gamble@preserveala.org).
I am currently having trouble receiving messages on my home computer.
Thanks again!
