Pension files of Hiram J. Conover, original pension claim number
243,043, 13th Kentucky Infantry, Companies B & H, filed for by his father,
Levi Conover, and accrued pension filed for by Levi's youngest son John
Milton Conover after Levi's death. Hiram enlisted in Co. H of the 13th KY
INF and was transferred to Co. B by orders of Col. Hobson. His brothers
William Henry Conover and Dominicus Conover were both Privates in Co. B.
Dominicus was later transferred to the 6th KY Cavalry Co. I and served

shot by a sniper and died in the arms of his brother William Henry
Conover, after instructing his brother not to kill the sniper just because
he had killed him. Dominicus Conover was born in 1846 and died sometime
around September of 1865, within three weeks of his returning home from
war. William Henry Conover was born July 17, 1842, and died at about
midnight on April 11, 1922. His original pension claim number was 878373.
The pension files of Hiram J. Conover consist of about 70 pages of
documents. Spelling has not been corrected; some punctuation has been
added for clarity. All major documents have been included. This file has

SURGEON'S CERTIFICATE OF EXAMINATION OF A DEPENDENT RELATIVE.
Claim No. 243.043
State: Kentucky, County: Adair,
Post Office: Columbia March 21st, 1882.
I HEREBY CERTIFY That I have carefully examined Levi Conover, who claims a
pension as the dependent Father of Hiram J. Conover, who is alleged to
have died ......, and that in my opinion, based on such examination and a
personal acquaintance with him for 20 years, the said Levi Conover is
physically incapacitated for the support of himself and family, the
nature, degree, and duration of his disability is as follows:
This old man has no physical disability, except such as is common to old
men.
He is able to work some and does work all he can. He is 68 years old, and
two years ago he had a severe spell of pneumonia, since which time he has
not been very stout. He had four sons, three of whom enlisted in the army.
One Hiram J. Conover was killed. Another died a few days after his term of
service expired, the other was a free man when he returned and assisted
his father no more. He has no family now except his wife. He has a very
poor farm, and it is a very difficult thing for him to make a support. He
is and always has been intensely
loyal, one among the very first to vote the Republican Ticket, and is too
honest to ask for what he does not think himself entitled to receive.

very low, and for several days his recovery was very doubtful. Since that
Time, Claimant has not been able to do much hard labor, but has done some
work. That in 1884 he was first
called to treat Claimant and found him Suffering with Rheumatism and
treated him for that disease. His Knee Joints was swollen then and he was
not able to walk for about one week, and that he has prescribed for him
several times since then. That about the latter part of Dec 1886 he was
called to see Claimant and found him Suffering with Hemephega which

aged 53 and whose post office Address Montpelier Adair Co Ky who being
duly sworn declares that he has been intimately acquainted with the
claimant Levi Conover for about forty years, and have lived within one and
a half miles of him all his life. That claimant is about 73 years of age,
and has been a farmer by occupation ever since he can remember. That he
has been able to work some ever since before the war and made a crop every
year until about the year 1877 when he had a spell of fever and the year
following does not think claimant was able to make a crop that year, That
he has not been as stout any more and has not been able to do hard labor
since that time and has cost his hearing to a great exstent and has
generally given down. That his income since 1863 has not been sufficient
to support and maintain his family from his own labor and that he has had
no other legal help except his son John M who married in the year 1877,
but he can not state just how much income Claimant has had from his labor
and other sources in 1863 and since that time. That he has Known of his
children having to help support him and his family more or less ever since
the war. His Son William H. and John M. and S.M. Roy his son in law have
all had to help him in the way of work, provision, and money, but he can
not state Just how much they have contributed to his support during each
year, but for the last few years his children has had to almost intirely
had to support him and his wife. That Claimant is now confined at his son

worth about $400.00 in 1863 and is worth less now and each year since, it
is poor place and worn out, and that claimant has owned one horse and
colt, and cow or two, and a few hogs all long each year. That his personal
property each year upon an average has not amounted to over $150 one
hundred and fifty dollars, and what property of that kind he owns now is
not worth much over $100.00 one hundred dollars. Affiant further states
Claimant a few years ago deeded his land to his children from the fact he
was not able to Keep it up and make a support and that he is now entirely
dependent on his children for support. That he has seen during the war,
money in Claimant possession that he said his son had sent him, and that
he Know his son the dead soldier did contribute to Claimant support before
and while in the service. That he Knows the above facts from personal
Knowledge. That he has no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

recently. The land is worth above two hundred dollars now,and was not
worth over four hundred dollars in 1863. That Claimant has owned one or
two horse and a few cattle, one or two, and a few hogs. That his personal

two hundred dollars. That for the last ten years he has not been able to

Hiram J. Conover of Co B. 13 Regt Ky Inft. personally appeared before me a
Notary Public in for the county and state aforesaid. Washington Holt aged
70 years whose Post office address is Montpelier Adair Co Ky and states in
the aforesaid case as follows. That he has Known the Claimant for more
than 50 years, and have lived within one mile of him for 50 years and that
he remembers when Claimant was married but does not remember the date of
the marriage, but thinks it about 48 or 50 years ago. That Claimant is
about 73 years of age and by occupation a farmer. That he is unable to
state with any certain corrections just the amount of income Claimant has
made each year since 1863 to the present time, but to his certain
Knowledge he has not made enough produce to support his family since his
sons left him and went into the War. That Claimant has been able to work
some all the time but his farm is poor and worn out. What labor he could
do would not support his family, and that he had no other income but that
derived from his own labor and the help, part of the time, of his son John
M. until he married in the year 1878, and that what they could both make
was not suffiecient to maintain the family, and his other children has
helped to support him from year to year in the way of work and provision.
Affiant farther states that Claimant owned a farm in 1863 worth he thinks
about $2.00 per acre but does not Know just how many acres, but does not
think there is over 200 two hundred acres to the best of his judgement of
the Country; and this farm is located on the waters of Russell Creek in
Adair County, and that he has owned and worked this farm ever since until
a short time ago, when he gave it to his children as he could no longer
work it, and Claimant is now living with his son in law Silas M Roy.
Claimant had a spell of Pneumoney fever about 1877 or 78, and came near
dying, and Claimant has not been able to do much labor since that time. Dr
W.B. Montgomery treated him during that spell of sickness and Claimant
partially lost his hearing in that sickness. That some time during the
latter part of Dec 1886 Claimant had a paralytic stroke, and has been
confined ever sinse that time. Affiant farther states that during the war
when his sons was in the war he frequently heard it spoken of that his
sons had sent him money home; do not know what amount. That Claimant has
always owned one or two horses and a milk cow or two and a few hogs. That
he has no interest in the prosecution of this Claim. That he knows the
