The Meadow Hill Inn, Columbia, Kentucky
When the Meadow Hill Inn opened in Columbia in the spring of 1947, it immediately became a social center as well as Columbia and Adair County's finest eatery. The following articles, transcribed from the Adair County News, give a glimpse of how important it was in post-war Columbia. Wednesday, April 2, 1947, page one NEW RESTAURANT OPENS THURSDAY _____ Walker and Cheatham Announce Opening of Meadow Hill Inn and Invite Public To Open House Meadow Hill Inn, the elaborate new restaurant and confectionery, which William L. Walker has built on Burkesville Street, three blocks from the Public Square, will open tomorrow. Mr. Walker and his partner, Robert E. Cheatham, announce that they will hold open house Thursday and Friday with the confectionery in full operation. On Saturday they start serving meals and the Inn will be open for business from early morning until late at night. No expense has been spared in making Meadow Hill Inn as modern as the times will permit. All equipment is of the finest and most up-to-date and the place is beautifully decorated throughout. The parking problem has been solved by a large parking lot in front of the building. On the first floor is the confectionery and lounge equipped with a large fountain, comfortable booths and show cases to display candies, cigars, cigarettes and gift items, which the management will feature. Behind the confectionary and lounge is a spacious dining room, which will accommodate quite a crowd. Bird prints, gay draperies and a fire place make it an inviting place in which to dine. The kitchen, also on the first floor, has every modern convenience. The cook, Joe Acre, recently returned here, after eight years experience in a fashionable Ann Arbor, Mich., restaurant. Mrs. Robert E. Cheatham will assist the management as dietician. On the lower floor is a private dining room, known as the "Pioneer Room," and decorated in keeping with the name, which will be used for private parties, club dinners and banquets. Walker Florist also has quarters on this floor and the shop may be reached from an outside entrance without passing through the upper floor. Other features of Meadow Hill Inn are rest rooms for ladies and gentlemen on both floors; an oil heating system; asphalt tile flooring and soundproof ceilings through-out. The plant was erected according to State Board of Health specifications for a Grade A restaurant. It was built under the supervision of Mason Judd, local contractor. ************************************************************************* A half-page ad appeared on page eight in the same edition of the News, proclaiming Meadow Hill Inn as Columbia's "newest and finest restaurant" and as "the home of good food." As part of the official opening on Saturday, April 5th, the first 500 customers were to receive complimentary servings of Swift's ice cream. A notice in the April 16th edition stated that the Inn "Will close all day on Tuesday until further notice." An ad for Walker Florist appeared on page five of the April 2nd edition, listing the many Easter-related floral items available. SENIORS ENTERTAINED AT MEADOW HILL INN One of the most pleasing school events in the history of Columbia High School was the banquet given at the Meadow Hill Inn on Friday evening by the Junior Class for the Senior class, faculty and members of the school board. The impressive new dining room was attractively arranged with a variety of bright colored spring flowers and rainbow colors were shown in program booklets. After a delicious dinner which was served to more than one hundred people, an interesting program was given by the host class. The theme for the meeting was placed in "Holiday Inn" with Carl Hughes as toast master. He introduced the program with a discussion of Happy Holiday. Geren Bybee spoke on "Swing It," in a welcome address. Lois Petty responded, using the subject, "Rehearsal." A number of junior girls sang a chorus and Marie Dunbar and Mary Ruth Page continued the theme. Mildred Dillingham and Ruby Hutchison sang, "The River of Roses" as a duet and Mrs. Joe Hutchison, speaking on the subject, "The Downbeat," compared the director's signal in an orchestra to a commencement occasion. The "Goodbye" was led by Gladys Combest and sung by Edwin R. Cundiff, Ralph Reece, Frank Paxton and Carl Hughes. ************************************************************************* Wednesday, May 14, 1947, page one G.I. Flying School Planned Plans for a G.I. Flying School to be started within two weeks at Streeval Field, are well under way and all veterans interested in learning to be pilots will be offered the opportunity at no expense under provisions of the G.I. Bill of Rights. Jim Beckett, of Lebanon, who has operated a similar school there for more than a year, will have charge of the branch school here. He was a flying instructor with the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Beckett will be at the Meadow Hill Inn on Friday of this week to take applications and all interested veterans are requested to contact him there, bringing a copy of their discharge. ************************************************************************* Wednesday, May 28, 1947, page one Walker Buys Partner's Interest in Restaurant William L. GRADS PLAN REUNION DINNER Members of the class of 1930 graduating class at the Columbia High School are planning a reunion dinner which will be held at Meadow Hill Inn next Saturday night. Mrs. George Hadley and Miss Eva Frazer are in charge of arrangements and they expect a large number of the original class of thirty students to be present. ************************************************************************ Wednesday, May 19, 1948 Walkup-Walker Miss Maxine Walkup and Mr. William L. Walker were united in marriage on Monday morning, May 10, at eleven o'clock at the Parkview Methodist Church, in Louisville. Rev. H.T. Chandler was the officiating minister. The bride was attired in a tailored dress of white crepe, with brown accessories and wore a white orchid on her shoulder. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Walkup, of Jamestown, she is a graduate of the Jamestown High School and Lindsey Wilson Junior College. For the past three years she has been a teacher in the Jamestown Public Schools. Miss Marie Walkup, sister of the bride and her only attendant, wore a pink dress of embroidered linen with white accessories. Her corsage was a white orchid. Buford Smith served as best man. Mr. Walker, the son of Mrs. Nat Walker, and the late Mr. Walker, attended Lindsey Wilson and was in the Navy during World War II for three and a half years. He is proprietor of Meadow Hill Inn. They have an apartment at the home of his mother on Frazer Ave., which they are now occupying after a short wedding trip. ************************************************************************* Wednesday, June 2, 1948, page one Meadow Hill Inn Approved By A.A.A. William L. Walker, proprietor of Meadow Hill Inn, has been notified by the American Automobile Association that following a visit of one of their field representatives his Inn has received a favorable report. A special program had been arranged for the occasion and Teddy Hornback, athletic director of Western Teachers College, Bowling Green, was the guest speaker. Grads of 1938 Hold Reunion Banquet Members of the Class of 1938 at the Columbia High School held a reunion banquet at Meadow Hill Inn on Saturday night, July 3, with Miss Mary Lucy Lowe, class sponsor, as guest of honor. Allen Young acted as toastmaster and the speakers included Mrs. John Burr, Mrs. J. Irvin Monroe and Miss Lowe. Rev. Chester Young gave the invocation and dismissed the group at the close of the program. A challenging devotion was given by Miss Cyrintha Terry...Mrs. Julia Judd, of Greensburg, had charge of the recreation in which the Cumberland River Quartette was featured. All present reported a "swell" dinner and a fine time. ************************************************************************* Wednesday, November 16, 1949, page seven (in the Society column) Circus Party Given At Meadow Hill Inn Mrs. Raymond Lacy entertained the 2nd and 3rd grades of the Lindsey Training School with a Circus party November 1, at Meadow Hill Inn, honoring the 7th birthday of her little girl, Betty Ray Lacy. Invitations were sent in the form of admission tickets to a circus. Many and varied circus characters were present. The little guests enjoyed an amateur circus the first half hour of the program. Those performing were: Isabell Ann Glowacki as a famous singer; Linda Sue Kell as an acrobat; Sharon Lynn Dohoney and Phyllis Kell were ballet dancers and the dancing twins, Lee and Lynn, were portrayed by Lee Kelsay and Nancy Moran. Following the amateur circus the children were introduced to Bozo the Clown on records, who in turn took the children under the big circus tent and introduced them to the animals and performers of the big top. Pictures were displayed by the hostess, as Bozo the Clown made all the introductions. At intervals during the circus free prizes were drawn by the little guests. Caldwell and Mrs. George Simpson. ************************************************************************* Wednesday, April 6, 1949, page one Lindsey Raiders Guests at Annual Banquet The annual Lindsey Basketball Banquet was given by the Lindsey Pep Club on Fri-day night of last week at Meadow Hill Inn. Steak dinners were served to members of the team, their guests, and their fans. The guest speaker for the evening was Coach Overall, athletic director from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookville. He spoke on "How Basketball Training Builds Character." The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Kentucky Conference Play Trophy to the captains of the team, Lowell Reeg and "Bib Bill" Kelley. Each of the graduating Raiders expressed his thanks to the faculty. student body and to the town's people of Columbia for the support and hospitality shown them. They are: Lowell Reeg, Portsmouth, Ohio; Bob Langley, Louisville; Bill Kelley, Frazer; Darnell Waters, Springfield; Claude (Punkin) Sharp, of Greensburg, and Harold Boyd, Shepherdsville. Walker, R.H. Walker, Barksdale Hamlett, W.I. Fraser, H.C. Randall, A.P. White, Curt Yarberry and Miss Elva Goodhue, hostesses. The members and guests enjoyed the dramatic skit, "Nobody Sleeps," which was directed by Miss Noma Dix Winston with the following Lindsey Wilson Students in the cast: Spike, a burglar, Bobby Jackson; Daisy Busby, Daisy Harlamert; Ada Busby, Ruth Crabtree; Glory Busby, Lillie Foley; Busby, a would-be novelist, Nancy Suddarth. The Club will follow its usual custom of filling Christmas stockings for Nichols [Veterans'] Hospital patients. This year, instead of the usual tarltan stockings, men's socks will be used, one of which may be filled with hard candy, tooth powder, etc. Mrs. W.D. Kirk was welcomed as a new member of the Club. Mrs. W.H. Moody, chairman of the Music Committee, presented the matter of the Club sponsoring the Chapel Choir from Corbin for a con-cert December 13. The Club will also sponsor the solicitation of subscriptions to Holland's Magazine, the proceeds to be used in its work. To Dedicate War Memorial State Commander Cecil Wilson, Of Glasgow, Will Make Address At Service On Armistice Day. Columbia Post 6097 Veterans Of Foreign Wars announce that a special program will be held Tuesday, November 11, Armistice Day, to dedicate the Monument erected last summer at the entrance to Memorial Park honoring Adair County's war dead. Cecil Wilson, of Glasgow, State Commander of the V.F.W., will be the principal speaker for the occasion and a program befitting the event is being arranged. Members of the V.F.W., American Legion, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will meet at Meadow Hill Inn and march to Memorial Park, where the program starts at 11:00 a.m. Columbia merchants are requested to close their doors of one hour during the dedication service. Flying School he will open at Streeval Field later this month. The board is composed of David Heskamp, chairman, Warren Shipp, A.S. Allison, William Cheatham, Alfred Flowers and Elsey Burton. Walker, when he spoke here on Tuesday night of last week. Warren Speaker At Rotary Dinner Members of the Columbia Rotary Club held their weekly dinner meeting at the Meadow Hill Inn on Monday night with the president, Louis Merkley, presiding. Dr. H.C. Randall, program chairman and aviation enthusiast, briefly told of the progress being made at Streeval Airport. He then introduced the guest speaker, W.H. Warren, flying instructor at the airport. Mr. Warren outlined the advancement of aviation in his talk and told of benefits it has to offer towns and communities. V.A. beam, Chief of State Fireman's Training, closed Friday night and the eighteen local volunteer firemen who attended said that they benefitted greatly by the course. Capt. Davis Entertains With Dessert Bridge Mrs. Owen D. Davis entertained with a dessert bridge at Meadow Hill Inn on Tuesday evening. The tables were decorated with roses as was the large dining room where the guests were entertained. Four prizes were awarded and refreshments were served before and after the games. The Rotary Club met Monday evening at Meadow Hill Inn with Mrs. R.R. Walker as guest speaker. Charlie Clift, president, presided at the meeting and T.C. Brown, program chair-man, introduced the speaker, who gave an interesting talk on Girl Scouting. Ivey was hostess to the Columbia Book Club at Meadow Hill Inn on Saturday afternoon. Miss Frances Bogie, who had charge of the program, gave an excellent summary review of "Elizabeth, Captive Princess," by Margaret Irvin. This study of the life of England's famous queen presents the events in her life during the reign of her sister, Mary. The president, Charles Hood, presided, and Howard Cheatham, who was in charge of the program, presented Mr. Ed Stanley, who made an excellent talk on "Americanism." Lenwood Gore was elected secretary to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of Kenneth Williams, who is leaving Columbia.
