Miss Docia Calhoun Leaves For Canada

Miss Docia Calhoun, of Garlin, who has been doing mission work in Orlando, Fla., for the past four years, has been transferred to Saskatchewan, Canada, for work in the North Star Mission, of the Brethren in Christ Church.

Miss Calhoun has been visiting her sister, Mrs. L.E. Shepherd, and family, near Webb's Cross Roads, for several days and left Saturday for Cincinnati, Ohio, to spend a week with her sister, Miss Flossie Calhoun. She will spend a week in West Milton, Ohio, where she will assist in a revival before leaving for her Canada destination.

She has many friends in Adair County who wish her every success in her new field of work.

Oklahoma Visitors

Miss Mattie Tupman and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Tupman has as guests last Tuesday night their cousins, Mrs. Sue Royse Fordyce and daughter, Miss Harriett Fordyce, of Ponca, Okla. They were en route home from Winston Salem, N.C., where they had spent a month. Mrs. Fordyce, a former teacher who had been elected head of Oklahoma's Educational Activities, wished to visit her birth place and the home of her maternal grandparents, the late Martha Ann and John Tupman, of Pleasant Grove, the "Bull Run" community. Miss Harriett, a teacher of Science and Nature Study, expected to visit Mammoth Cave after leaving Columbia. [The Social Security Death Index has entries for Susan R. Fordyce, born September 1, 1872, died September 15, 1966, last residence Ponca City, Kay County, Oklahoma; and for Harriet_ Fordyce, born May 14, 1908, died June 5, 1995, last residence Ponca City, Kay County, Oklahoma.]

Capt. Warren Shipp Returns From Germany

Captain Warren Shipp, who has been stationed in Germany for the past six months, returned to the States last week and joined his family here on Friday. He is on a 20 day leave prior to being reassigned to a new post. [An article in the November 30, 1949 edition of the News spoke thus of Captain Shipp's service to his country:

"During the war years he served with the 20th Air Force in the Pacific Theatre for 10 months in which he flew 27 missions as a pilot. He is entitled to wear the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with one Cluster, Air Medal with three Clusters, Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and the German Occupation Medal.

Upon completion of hostilities in Europe, Captain Shipp flew 100 missions with Operation Vittles, the famed Airlift that carried supplies into Berlin..."

Captain Shipp was a great-grandson of one of Adair Counties most famous native sons, Colonel Frank Lane Wolford.] Additional information on Capt. Shipp may be found here.

Montpelier

Work on the $25,000 road project extending from Helm's Shop, near here [in Russell County], to Rowe's Cross Roads on Hale highway [in Russell County] is now well underway. Spickard & McClure, Jamestown,  are the contractors and the work is being done under supervision of the State Department of Rural Roads. ["Spickard" was Marvin Spickard, husband of Edith Miller Spickard, a lifelong resident of Crocus. Later, both Marvin and Edith taught at Lindsey Wilson (then Junior) College.]

Miller Field

Mrs. Elsa Shepherd has returned from the Somerset Hospital, where she underwent a very serious operation.

Mr. V.O. [Vernon Overstreet] Wheat, who has been in declining health for some time, remains about the same.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Tarter and children left Sunday for their home in Cincinnati, Ohio, after visiting friends and relatives at this place last week. [This was one of the last trips Mrs. Tarter, the former Miss Lee Wheat, would make back to Adair County. She died in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Tuesday, November 22, 1949 and her remain were returned to Adair County for interment in the White Cemetery just off (present day) Sulphur Creek Road.]

Mr. Jack Compton arrived home a few days ago from California, where he received his discharge after spending three years in the navy.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Holt and son, of Kokomo, Ind., visited Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Goodin and family one day last week.

Mr. Willie Ray Stargel is erecting a new barn at this time.

Pleasant Grove

Miss Thelma Montgomery, of Louisville, spent the weekend here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Montgomery.

Mr. Carlos Ballou spent a few days last week in Pikeville, the guest of his brother, M/Sgt. James E. Ballou, and family.

Messrs. Aca, Dewey and Weymond McGaha, Cincinnati, Ohio, were visiting Mr. William Ballou and family on Saturday.

Mr. Loren McGaha, who had been spending a two week's vacation here with his wife, left on Saturday to resume his work in Cincinnati, Ohio.
