Mr. McMahon, thank you for your response and your offer of assistance. It has been very difficult to identify current ownership of former CSX Railroad right-of-way properties. There are a number of deeds at the County Court House which reflect sales of right-of-way by CSX, but there are no records in the Carter County PVA (Tax Assessor) Office which specifially identifiy all current owners of former CSX right-of-way properties. In fact, CSX is not referenced anywhere in the tax records. The deeds that I have researched and mapped do not appear to account for all of the former right-of-way, so I am assuming that any property not recorded as having been sold, is still owned by CSX. As you may be aware, the property descriptions on many of the deeds is quite ambiguous, often lacking in fixed or easily identifiabe boundry references. Because of the difficulties described above, it would be extremely helpful to me if you could provide me with an inventory of properties in Carter County to which CSX still holds title. As I mentioned before, our intention is to create a walking/biking/equestrian trail on the former CSX right-of-way completely across Carter County (Soldier to Rush, Ky). We are currently working in the Hitchins to Grahn area, but we would be interested in aquiring any remaining right-of-way property still owned by CSX. Best regards, John W. Grace
