Burton Genealogy Submitted by: Joel L. Carter The following should be viewed only as a starting point and not as gospel. None of this has been verified. Jacob L. Burton (b. 1780, d. 1840) married Rebecca Rachel Berry (b. 1785, d.?). They had the following children: Catherine, Isaac, Elizabeth, Juliann, Charles, Aaron, Jacob F., Melissa, and James. Jacob F. (b. 16 July 1826, Russell County, d. 17 Sept 1904 in Lawrence County, Kentucky) married Phoebe Carter (b. 13 Mar 1833, d. 27 Feb 1895 Lawrence County, Kentucky) 21 Oct 1852 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. This connects the Carter & Burton families prior to the connection occurring with the marriage of Rosena Burton to Lafayette “Lafe” Carter circa 1901. I may return to this later in reference to Carter genealogy. Aaron Burton (b. 1825, d. 1890(?) married Nancy Easterling 1844 in Scott County, Virginia. Aaron served in 40th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry in the Civil War. Nancy, having outlived Aaron, drew his Civil War service pension. Aaron & Nancy’s children were: John, William, Jacob, Samuel, Joseph, Thomas, George Washington, Martha, James, Sallie, and Martin. Aaron is reportedly buried in the Easterling Cemetery on Upper Stinson and Nancy is buried in the Burton Cemetery on Canoe Run just off Upper Stinson. Thomas Burton (b. 1858, d. 1914) married first Melvina Stevens (b. ca 1861, Morgan County, Kentucky(?); d. 1899 in childbirth with son, Ferris(?)) in 1882, and may have married Chloe McBreyer (b. 1882, d.1967) later. Thomas Burton, whether or not married to Chloe McBreyer, had a child, Malcolm Burton, by her. Malcolm is listed as an heir to the Thomas Burton Place on a deed recorded in 1929 in Carter County. Melvina’s parents were Jacob Stevens or Stephens(?) and Mary J. “Polly” Lewis. Chloe’s parents were Hartwell & Elizabeth McBreyer. Thomas died around 1914. In 1920, Chloe & Malcolm are listed as living with Chloe’s parents and it’s indicated that Malcolm is six years old. Thomas & Vina are buried in the Carter Cemetery on Carter Branch off Lower Stinson. Chloe, reportedly, is buried in the Hall Cemetery on Rt. 1654 at Williams Creek, near Kilgore. Children of Thomas & Melvina “Vina” Stevens Burton were: Rosena, Elizabeth “Lizzie”, Ethel, Harve, Carr, Bertha, & Ferris. Child of Thomas Burton & Chloe McBreyer: Malcolm Burton.
