Will of Johannes Diehm (John Deem); In the name of God, Amen. I John Deem of Fayette County Common wealth of Pennsylvania German being weak in body and in perfect

mind and memory thanks be given to almighty God, calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die. I do make and ordain

this may last will and testament, that is to say principally and first I give and recommend my soul into the hand of almighty God that gave it, and my body I

recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors. Nothing doubting again by the mighty power of God to receive the same (---)

and as touching such worldly estate as God has pleased to bless me with in this life. I give, demise, and dispose of the same in manner and form following. After all

my charges and lawful debts and contracts are discharged all my real and personal estate to be equally divided amongst my beloved children, namely, Lewis,

Mark, John, Adam and Jacob as also Catharina and Margaret. After a discount of those indebted to the estate the balance being counted the residue of their legacy only and those

not indebted are to draw equal shares with them indebted considering the debt to be a part of the (---) only those contracts being heretofore made must be fulfilled.

Concerning the land that I sold to Mark & George provided they fulfill their contract for both which there is an article specifying the contracts. Furthermore I

make, constitute and ordain John Sallady & Ab--- Merritt to be my executors, ratifying and confirming this to be my will and testament and do hereby revoke and

| John DEEM and members of his family are buried in the Astoria Cemetery in Madison township, Butler Co. (section 6, township 2, range 4). It is also known as the

| Astoria-Poastown and Elk Creek Cemetery. Among the earliest burials there are: Joseph Deem, son of Adam and Jane Deem, died August 24, 1818;

| aged 7 years. John Deem died August 29, 1835 age 83. Mary Deem died March 20,1845 age 91. Adam Deem died September 2, 1829 age 50. Jane

| Campbell consort of Adam Deem died September 25, 1847 age 63. John H. Deem died Feb. 12, 1862 aged 70. Elizabeth wife of John H.

| Deem died March 29, 1867 age 71. Elizabeth Hinkle, died May 21, 1859 aged 76. Joseph Hinkle, senior died July 3, 1881 aged 94.

| John died one day short of his 82nd birthday. His will, which was written on March 7, 1835, names his wife, Mary, as his sole beneficiary.

| Joseph DEEM and John H. DEEM are listed as executors, but their relationship to their father is not stated in the will. The will was witnessed by Robert

| DINE and George LEIBER. Interestingly enough, the will is signed "Johan N. Diehm". The inventory of John DEEM's estate provide some

| outstanding debts owed to him by five people, including his sons, Joseph DEEM and John H. DEEM. After settlement of the estate, the widow of the

| deceased was due $343.77, which included the unpayed debts.

| Note: Johan Nicolas DIEHM was born on November 21, 1756 in Berks Co.,Pennsylvania and baptized November 28, 1756 at Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church by

| one account. His obituary at the time of his death identified his birthplace as Maryland. His age was given as 82 minus one day which would

| put his birth date at September 6, 1753. This conflict needs to be researched further. Johan DIEHM is listed with his brother, Mark, on a list

| of young people who have started to go to instruction on February 6, 1771 at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Frederick Maryland. At some

| point in time, the name DIEHM was anglicized to DEEM. Most records found after 1790 show the new spelling of DEEM. John DEEM was living

| in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania at the time of his daughter Christina's baptism on September 10, 1783. The DEEM name is very uncommon. The census and

| marriage records mentioned above are some of the earliest records I have found for the name DEEM. No DEEMs appear in the 1790 First Federal

| Census for Ky., Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, or South Carolina. DEEM's do appear in the first Pennsylvania Census, however. By 1792,

| his family was living in Ky. where his son John H. was born. John DEEM and his son Adam are found in the Second Census of Ky.

| which was enumerated August 1, 1800. At that time, they were residents of Campbell Co., Ky.. Four of his eight children were also married

| in Campbell County. Adam DEEM was married December 23, 1800 in Harrison Co., Ky.. Adam DEEM and his brother-in-law Thomas ISRAEL were some of

| the first settlers of Butler Co., Ohio. He moved to Ohio in 1803 and bought property in Madison Township, Butler Co., November 3, 1808. He later purchased

| additional tracts in 1811. He is also found in early Ohio tax records. John DEEM followed his son to Butler Co. in 1810. His son John H. DEEM was also a

| Butler County resident before the war of 1812.

| Note: Mary Louise Puthoff was, as she describes it, born in the bushes. She was born on her father's farm | on Reservoir Road east of Richmond. The original farmhouse, built by her grandfather, had burnt to the

| groundseveral years after she was born. When the house was rebuilt, the room she was born in was not

| included. In its place along the exterior of the new house was a row of bushes allowing the claim about being

| born in the bushes. Mary attended grades one through six at Pleasantview Grade School which was a four room

| school house with two grades to a room. She transferred to Highland Grade School for seventh and eighth

| grades and Rieley for ninth grade. She was very active in the 4-H program in many different areas. She showed

| cattle and was an alternate to the grand champion in dress fashion design competition at the Indiana State Fair.

| She also attended the International 4-H Congress in Chicago to receive a National Safety Award. She graduated

| from Richmond High School in 1947. She attended Purdue University and Reid Memorial Hospital

| where she was in x-ray training. She also attended St. Anne's Hospital in Chicago. She was a member of Holy

| Family Catholic Church in Richmond before moving to St. Charles, IL in 1968. She had been employed in the

| insurance department for Belden Corp. before retiring in 1979. She also was lifelong member of the Delnor

| Community Hospital Auxiliary, a former member of the St.Edwdard High School Parents Club, and a member

| of St. Patrick CatholicChurch in St. Charles.

| | "George M. Riddle is a farmer of Slate district, Wood county, West Virginia. He settled there in 1857. He was born in Indiana | | Co., PA, July 10, 1842. His parents, Peter and Mary Mogle Riddle, came to Wood county with him. He was married in Slate | | district, September 21, 1865, to Elizabeth Deem, who was born in the same district, September 19, 1845. Her father and mother, | | Henderson and Mary Pool Deem, were also born in this district. Her grandfather, William Pool, served in the War of 1812. Mr. | | Riddle and wife have been blessed with eight children - all live at home. Mr. Riddle was school commissioner in 1867-8,

| | township clerk in 1869, superintendent of county infirmary in 1869, supervisor of Slate district in 1872, constable in 1874-75,

| | justice of the peace in 1876-80, president of the board of education in 1881, of which board he has been secretary for some years.

| | May 30, 1863,he enlisted in the Union army in Company H, 3d West Virginia Cavalry, and was engaged in the battles of

| | Gettysburg, at Hedgesville, White Sulphur Springs, Lewisburg, Lynchburg, Winchester, Bunker Hill, Fishers Hill, and many

| | others. Mr. Riddle received a gunshot wound in the left shoulder on September 22, 1864; fought under General Averill, and was

| | "This is the true story of a Rathbone born more than a century ago who used a baseball game as his cover to elope with the girl he

| | loved, right under the very noses of her disapproving parents. The innovative suitor was Van Allen Doremus Rathbone, whose

| | nickname was "Pouch." The strange love affair took place in West Virginia during the "Gay '90's." As a boy, Van Allen

| | picked up a great love of baseball, and also the nickname, although no one today seems to know how he got that name. In 1894 he

| | was an infielder on his home-town team in Elizabeth, WVA. he was then 23, and another love had entered his life - Martha

| | Elizabeth "Pink" Riddle, then 17. No one seems to know either how she acquired her nickname. She was the daughter of prominent

| | citizens who strongly disapproved of their daughter's interest in Pouch. Their main objection seemed to be that he was a baseball

| | player. Pouch followed the rules of the day and asked the Riddles for permission to court their daughter. They absolutely

| | refused. Pouch then took an alternative route - elopement. Four times, he and Pink tried to slip away to be married, but without

| | success. He even followed the traditional course of placing a ladder against the Riddle home, and tried to climb up to bring Miss

| | Riddle down with him. Alas, the ladder broke, and Papa Riddle came storming out of the house with a shotgun!

| | The Riddles then bought a vicious bulldog to patrol the premises, and Pouch one night had an unpleasant encounter with the dog.

| | He then realized that he would have to make other, more unorthodox plans. It seems that the Riddles were great baseball

| | fans, and never missed a home game. Oddly, they loved baseball, but didn't want a baseball player in the family.

| | On August 16, 1894, Elizabeth played host to a team from Burning Springs. The Riddles planned to attend the game, but made

| | sure that their daughter went with them. Pouch and Pink laid their plans carefully. It was an exciting game and the score was

| | close as the seventh inning ended. Papa Riddle didn't notice when Pouch disappeared from the home-town bench. He smiled

| | approvingly when Pink waved at a girlfriend in another part of the stands, the excused herself to go over and see that girl. The

| | game went on, but the Elizabeth team began to deliberately slow things down. Pouch and Pink had a friend with a buggy waiting

| | for them outside the stands, and they wanted plenty of time to get miles away before their plot was discovered. Everyone

| | assumed they would go to Parkersburg, the nearest "big city", to get married. Anticipating this, they headed in the other direction,

| | north to the Ohio River, which they crossed by ferry and found a justice of the peace in Marietta, OH. There they were married -

| | Pouch Rathbone still in his baseball uniform! When they returned to Elizabeth the next day the entire town had heard the story

| | and everybody turned out to greet the newlyweds. The courthouse was turned into a banquet hall and the rest of the day was

| | spent in merrymaking. At some point that day, Papa and Mama Riddle showed up and recognized that there was nothing they
