3 CONT From Thos J. Carter Jr.,:Someone in the family told me that
3 CONC grandfather owned at about that time the corner of what is now 4th
3 CONC Street and American Avenue, worth a fortune today. He tried to raise
3 CONC spinach and other vegetables there but the soil was not very good for

3 CONC the place was renamed Santa Fe Springs which, at one time, along with

3 CONT He apparently placed the same advertisement in the sections for Buena

3 CONT
3 CONT But the attempt to make a living well drilling and/or farming became
3 CONC nearly impossible because so many wells were using the subterranean
3 CONC water that the cost of pumping went up as the water table in Tulare

2 NOTE From Thos J. Carter, Jr.,: "One of the mishaps while working as a well
3 CONC driller wasfor him to break his neck - literally. He fell off the top
3 CONC of a well house and landed on his head. Apparently he did not lose
3 CONC consciousness and instructed his family on what to do for him. A rope
3 CONC was thrown over a roof joist in the barn and a loop was tied in the
3 CONC end, Grandfather's head was inserted in the loop which encircled his
3 CONC neck and the other end of the rope was tied to a stud. Tension was
3 CONC put on the rope so that grandfather's toes were barely touching the

3 CONC doctor, the examination revealed two of the neck vertabrae had been
3 CONC shattered. The rope placed grandfather in traction where he stayed
3 CONC until the doctor said it was no longer necessary and the traction
3 CONC saved his spinal cord from being severed. As a child, I could feel
3 CONC the splintered bones in his neck and they remained that way as he
3 CONC lived.
3 CONT
3 CONT "I recall that once he was living with us when grandfather had a fall

2 PLAC IRELAND or it could have been any number of other places!
2 NOTE Sources vary widely on his place of birth. Early census records

3 CONC "Mass" as his father's place of birth. Another says he was born on

2 NOTE I have a reasonably clear memory of Grandpa Cunningham (Eddy Clark)
3 CONC telling me that when he was a boy of about 8 to 10 years of age, the

3 CONC had gone on ahead and as "the man of the family", G'pa Cunningham rode

3 CONC famous Mexican bandit (Joaquin Murietta?) roaming the hills and he was
3 CONC afraid the bandit would come after them because the horse was
3 CONC valuable.
3 CONT My father, Thos J. Carter, remembers the story this way: "As a youth,
3 CONC he (ECC) was given the responsibility of driving a herd of cattle by
3 CONC himself from one place to another, probably in the area of Monterey
3 CONC and Santa Clara counties. Suddenly he realized that he was being
3 CONC approached by a band of bandits. He was scared that the cattle he was
3 CONC entrusted with were going to be stolen from him and he might be
3 CONC killed. They approached him and learned his destination, but did not
3 CONC attempt to steal any of his herd. ECC said that encounter led one of
3 CONC the bandits to meet ECC's sister and the bandit became quite attentive

3 CONC about thirty years. He apparently was lecturing on behalf of the Sons
3 CONC of Temperance as early as 1843 in Zanesville, Ohio, and subsequently
3 CONC lectured extensively for the I.O.G.T. His "resume" cites: 27 Dec
3 CONC 1843, lecture in Johnstown PA per "Cambria Gazette", 3 Jan 1844
3 CONC Hollidaysburg, PA newpaper mentions his temperance lecture and says he
3 CONC has "left for the East", 17 May 1844, Niagara Falls, NY, Temperance

3 CONC Zanesville [OH] Olive Branch, Division No 26, of the Sons of
3 CONC Temperance (signed by H. Blandy).
3 CONT
3 CONT The "Gilroy Advocate" (CA) carries an announcement and then subsequent
3 CONC review of lectures given on behalf of the Gilroy I.O.G.T. on 8 Oct and

2 NOTE This whole Gilroy episode is a mystery. The ONLY time the name of JSC
3 CONC is publically associated with the store is the opening announcement
3 CONC and the Personal Property Tax Assessment. Here's the chronology:
3 CONT 14 May 1870 - Announcement in "Gilroy Advocate" - "CUNNINGHAM & WARNER

3 CONC Watches, Clocks and jewelry and warrant their work to give
3 CONC satisfaction. They have a reputation for dealing. Call and see them
3 CONC in the new building of Oldham, opposite Wangewnheim, Loewis store,
3 CONC corner of Martin and Monterey."
3 CONT 8 Oct 1870 - "DR" Cunningham "of Castroville" gives temperance lecture
3 CONC to Gilroy I.O.G.T. No mention of jewelry store in newspaper's
3 CONC write-up.
3 CONT 10 Dec 1870 - Announcement in "Gilroy Advocate" - announces the
3 CONC opening of H. C. Warner Jewelry Store. Wording of announcement is
3 CONC identical to that used by Cunningham & Warner. Thereafter, H. C.
3 CONC Warner advertisements appear regularly in the Advocate. Location is
3 CONC given as "Next door to Fred Briggs Drugstore" which was located on
3 CONC the corner of Monterey and Martin.
3 CONT 27 Apr 1871 - Philip Phillips gives much publicized concert in Gilroy.
3 CONC No mention in any article of the relationship to JSC.

3 CONT 30 Apr 1874 - page 388, H. C. Warner, Stock in Trade, $1500
3 CONT 30 Apr 1875 - page 395, H. C. Warner, Lot at NW Corner Forest St & Old
3 CONC Gilroy; Goods, wares, mdse including jewelry & watch, $2500 (by
3 CONC this time, Warner has sold the 6th & Monterey location to Jas. Zuck.
3 CONC The family of Jas Zuck were the primary founders of Gilroy and had
3 CONC spent time in Marion County, OH)
3 CONT
3 CONT Also interesting is that in addition to the Zuck family connection to
3 CONC Marion Co, OH, various other family names located in Gilroy at this
3 CONC time were: Dorland, Widney and a Mrs. L. Perrin, seamstress.

3 CONT Also interesting are these two things: 1) the land is sold to a

3 CONT Winnie Cunningham Young wrote of this time: "After the death of his

3 CONC four little children were staying with the Clarks, their mother's
3 CONC people at the time. He and his new wife came to Illinois for the
3 CONC children, Ida 10, Edd 8, Ione 6 and Ernest 4 years of age. They
3 CONC prepared to board the first overland train for California but were
3 CONC urged to wait for the second trip, fearing the road bed might sink in
3 CONC places.
3 CONT "They came on the second trip of the Overland to San Francisco.
3 CONC They then went to visit his oldest daughter, Mary C. Fisher in
3 CONC Woodland. Then the family came to Santa Cruz and stayed at a hotel on
3 CONC Front Street, where they were literally eaten alive by fleas, while
3 CONC looking for a place to locate. Monterey was chosen and became their
3 CONC new home.
3 CONT "They later settled in Castro Ville and still later in Santa Ana."
3 CONT
3 CONT Of the train trip, Thos J. Carter Jr., writes: "Someone had warned
3 CONC them that the roadbed, which had just been finished, was so unstable
3 CONC that accidents were likely to happen. They therefore booked on the
3 CONC second train. Each family carried its own provisions and the train
3 CONC would stop while the passengers got off the train, built a fire to
3 CONC cook the food and when the passengers had finished the meal theya ll
3 CONC reboarded and the train went on its merry way."
3 CONT
3 CONT Efforts to locate passenger lists for this second overland railroad
3 CONC crossing have, as of May 1998 been unsuccessful. See JSC individual
3 CONC file for the email from the Sacramento Railroad Museum.
3 CONT
3 CONT Later Winnie wrote: "In Castroville at one time lived only three white
3 CONC families - ours - the Dr. Cunninghams - the Pardoes and the Burlands.
3 CONC Mary Baldwin - teacher - taughter a private school for the children of
3 CONC these families." (The Cunninghams bought the Castroville lot from
3 CONC John Burland)
3 CONT
3 CONT Family stories had always told of them living "in Monterey". Thomas
3 CONC J. Carter, Jr. remembers Eddy Clark as an old man being driven around
3 CONC Monterey and thinking he recognized "their" house.
3 CONT
3 CONT I remember being told they lived in "the first brick house in
3 CONC Monterey" and there was something about a well in the yard adjacent to
3 CONC the house. Marilyn (Carter) Pukelis, on the other hand, remembers a
3 CONC story about them living on the waterfront and lowering their
3 CONC valuables, tied up in a bedsheet, into the ocean on a rope "when the
3 CONC pirates came".
3 CONT And just to add variation, Mary Halsel (Cunningham) Jones says she
3 CONC believes John Switzer Cunningham's jewelry store was stocked with
3 CONC items "the boys" had taken off "the pirate ship" after swimming out to
3 CONC it at night.! Were there "pirates" in Monterey around 1870?
