May 1, 1847 in North Carolina May 31,1847 reported in wellman_genealogy.com d. April 26, 1918 (photo) “he's supposed to have left a wife and family in NC because she would not come to KY with him, and he came alone to KY and simply took a new wife and started a new family without the benefit of divorce” 178.15B JAMES KNOX POLK LYON (14&22) (Mary, Jeremiah, Bennett) was born 31 May 1847 in Carter Co.Kv. and about 1873 married 1st to SARAH CATHERINE MAUK, who was born about 1853, the daughter of Joseph Sr., and Sarah "Sally" (Holbrook) Mauk. She died about 1892. He married 2nd to ELLEN BURTON on 30 Aug. 1910, in Carter Co. Ky. He died 26 Apr. 1918, shortly after being struck by a streetcar. James and Sarah are both buried in Mauk Cemetery on Route 986, Elliott Co. Ky. The family lived on Gimlet Creek straight across from the residence of James' father. Not long after Frankie's birth, his mother Catherine died. James K. not being able to take care of the infant Frankie, took the child to his brother John Robert and wife Amanda (Rose) Lyon, to be cared for. Amanda became very attached to Frankie, for she only had one son herself, named Jesse. Frankie became ill with Summer Complaint (a type of diarrhea) and died. Amanda grieved the loss of Frankie very much. The story of Frankie was told by Sara (Mauk) DeBord. Sara said she heard the story many times from her mother, Ellen (Rose) Mauk. Sara also states she has heard this story from others too. (Sara is 81 years old in 1981). Hubert Lyons Jr. states he believes this story of Frankie to be true, as in the Lyon's Plot there is a small unmarked grave, which very well could be Frankie Lyon's grave. The Lyon's Plot used to be called the old Lyon's Cem. by all the folks of the area. It is now known as the Holbrook Cem. James was known to the younger generations of the Lyon family as Uncle Jim and his wife as Aunt Kate. In Jim's youth he was known as TWO FISTED JIM LYON, by some of the people of the community. His hands were twice as wide as a normal man's hand. And if he put his back to a wall he could whip as many men that would dare come against him. However Jim wasn't of a violent nature, he was said to have a kind heart by his grandchildren, and a man of few words. When Jim's son William and his family moved to Beauty Ridge, Jim came and lived there for awhile, in a small log cabin near them. Jim was an excellent squirrel hunter, and would take his grandsons huntinn with him. Although his sight wasn't good in his old age, his grandsons would spot the squirrels and Jim would shoot them. His grandchildren also came over and helped him farm. Jim was thought to have been somewhat lonely at times for he lived by himself in his cabin. Jim eventually moved back to Olive Hill, Ky. with his other son Jesse E. Lyon. Jim was known to have been a very good dresser, was particular about how he looked. Jim was struck by a street car in Olive Hill, Ky. and his injuries soon led to death. His body was taken to Mauk Cem. and he was buried next to his wife. The passing of Uncle Jim was felt deeply by all his family and friends of this kindly old. man. married Sarah Catherine Mauk of Elliott Co.
