PROLOGUE Introduction to the parents and siblings of WILLIAM STAMPER 1839-1906 PARENTS: James W. "John" and Sarah(Stamper) Stamper JAMES W. STAMPER, also know as John Stamper and Pewter John Stamper 1st James W. Stamper, father of William Stamper, would have been born about 1799 or 1800, according to an Ashland Independent Newspaper dated June 22, 1882, that lists John's death at age 83, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Ezekiel and Hannah, (Stamper) McGlone, Buffalo Valley, Carter County, Kentucky. He was born possibly in Ashe County or Cherokee County, North Carolina. He was better known as John Stamper the name he married under June 8, 1820, Floyd County, Kentucky, to Sarah "Sallie" Stamper, reportedly his first cousin. A farmer, John and Sarah were married by a Methodist Episcopal Church Minister. This marriage record is found in Record Book 1, page 127 of the Floyd County Clerk's office, Floyd County, Kentucky. Prior to locating in Kentucky, John's history is sketchy and questionable as many documented facts from various sources are in conflict. For example it has been stated in print that John was born in either February, September or December, 1800, in Ashe, Swain or Cherokee County, N.C. John relocated from North Carolina to Carter County, Kentucky, sometime prior to June 1820, the year he married. John and Sarah, both age 50, are listed in the 1850 Carter County, Kentucky Census with six of their children and in the 1860 census, age 60, with three of their children. John, age 71 and Sarah, age 70 were living with their son, William Stamper, in the 1870 Carter County, Kentucky Census. Little is known about his history prior to Kentucky records. John is buried in the Bethel Cemetery, Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, but his monument is very difficult to read. Sources: 1850 & 1870 Census, Marriage Record, cemetery listing, monument, June 22, 1882 Ashland Independent article and records on their children John's parents remain in question. Some genealogy in print carry him as the son of a Cherokee Indian and a Reeves women, either an Agnes Reeves or her sister, depending on which Stamper relativeis speaking. Other genealogy carry his parents as Richard and Martha Patsy (Carter) Stamper as is carried by Jenny Cecil Kiser who lists John's birth as July 10, 1799, North Carolina. Jenny's lineage on John is listed below. John Stamper( Pewter John) 8th /Richard Stamper 7th /Joel Stamper 6th /Jonathan Brooks Stamper Sr. 5th / Virginia Powell Stamper 4th /John Stamper 3rd /William Stamper 2nd /John Stamper 1st Further support for Richard Stamper being his father was listed in an 1860 Lewis County Kentucky Census of James W.'s son, George Washington Stamper. This document lists additional information stating George was the grandson of Richard and Martha Carter Stamper. This writer hold's no documentation prior to John (Pewter John) Stamper but has copies of other genealogies that also lists Richard Stamper as John's father, in addition to other records that reference John as half- Cherokee Indian. This writer leaves the judgment to the reader. In a visit to the home of Cleo Ruthard Woodrow Stamper by Betty Stamper Wellman and Gladys Stamper Meyers, Cleo Ruthard said John's legal birth name was James W. Stamper and James himself took the name "John" aka "Pewter John Reeves Stamper". He also stated that John was half - Cherokee Indian and stated that John also used aliases of Reeves, Reed and Stillwell, Both Betty and Gladys are granddaughters of this William Stamper. Additionally, a notarized affidavit by Vernon J. Mead in December 1983, also shows John as a son of a Cherokee Indian. Cleo Ruthard's handwritten records lists two sons were born of the James W. Stamper and Sarah Moore union. They were William Thomas Moore Stamper and James Stamper. William Thomas married Emily Polly and had 12 children. James, who was born November 1799, and died May 1874, later called himself John and married Sarah Unknown, born January 5, 1799, and died November 30, 1876. A notarized December 1983 statement by Vernon J. Mead states that James W. "John" Stamper was the son of a Cherokee Indian Chief. Vernon is a direct descendant of Sylvania (Stamper) Fultz, the daughter of James W. " John" Stamper. Ancestors and Descendants by James Harley Hinton and Martha Alice Adams carry James W. "John" Stamper as a Cherokee Indian. James W. "John" Stamper is also referenced as part Cherokee Indian in article titled " Related Family" by Herbert Lee Hinton. SARAH STAMPER "Sarah Sallie" was born November 15, 1799, Kentucky, daughter of William Stamper "Tater Bill"and Agnes Emily Polly "Millie". Sarah's father gave written permission for her to marry John Stamper. Sarah died November 30,1874, Carter County, Kentucky. She is buried Bethel Cemetery, Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, and her monument is also unreadable. The publication "Pioneer Families Of Lewis County Kentucky Volume II" lists Sarah's death as December 30, 1874. Sarah Sallie Stamper's line has been documented as follows: Sarah Sallie Stamper 6th/William Stamper 5th/James W. Stamper is carried in various genealogy records as a child of John and Sarah's. No documentation is held at this time to support him as a child of this union. In the future, each sibling will be documented as fully as possible in their own individual family record. WILLIAM STAMPER AND DESCENDANTS WILLIAM STAMPER 2nd/James W. "John" Stamper 1s t William Stamper "Bill" was born September 11, 1839, Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, the son of James W. Stamper aka "John" and "Pewter John"and Sarah Sallie (Stamper) Stamper. Reportedly, his parents, John and Sarah, were first cousins , William's ancestors came from N.C. and Virginia. The 1850 and 1860 Carter County, Kentucky Census lists William at age 11 and 20. He was a farmer and a horseback mailman who married five times. At age 21, he married the first time to Nancy Eveline Lawson April 29, 1860, Carter County, Kentucky. Only one daughter was born to this union of short duration due to mother's early death. Sources: 1850 and 1860 Carter County, Kentucky Census, Marriage Certificate, Belle Kiser's Death, Inez (Gilliam) Webb Cynthia Katheryn (Stamper) Jacobs Shaffer's Bible records Nancy Eveline Lawson was born August 4, 1844, Morgan County, Kentucky. Nancy was age 18 and living in Carter County, Kentucky, when she married William. Death claimed Nancy December 25, 1861, Carter County, Kentucky, leaving a young daughter behind. Nancy is buried in Olive Hill's Bethel Cemetery, Carter County, Kentucky.. The family monument lists her as Nancy E. wife of William and also mother of Malinda. Sources: Marriage Certificate, family monument & 1996 Bethel Cemetery listing. CHILD OF WILLIAM & NANCY EVELINE (LAWSON) STAMPER. CAROLINE MALINDA or MALINDA CAROLINE STAMPER based on the following birth and death information and the mother's death date. The child was listed in the 1861-1862 Carter County, Kentucky Vital Statistics as Caroline, born May 10, 1861, Carter County, Kentucky, and died November 10, 1861, at age 6 months of bold hives, Carter County, Kentucky. Th name Caroline is not on the family monument. However, Malinda appears on the family monument as born June 24, 1861, and died November 19, 1861, and is listed as daughter of William and Nancy E. Stamper, Bethel Cemetery, Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky. On the same monument, the mother's death is listed December 25, 1861. Because of the closest between the birth and death dates, it is believed Caroline and Malinda is the same child. The May and June birth months of the same year rule out the chance that Caroline and Malinda could have been twins. The mother's death just seven months later precludes time for a second child. It is possible that an error was made in the typing of the Kentucky vital statistics. Kentucky birth and death records were not required to be recorded prior to 1911. Stamper "Pewter John Stamper", married a second time at age 30 to Nancy Pendland sometime between 1862 and 1866, probably in Carter or Lewis County, Kentucky. William is listed in the 1870 Carter County Kentucky Census with real estate value at $400.00 and personal assets value at $1100.00. At least five and possibly six children were born to this union. The census also lists his parents, John, age 71, and Sarah, age 70, living with William. She married under Lodenia, March 9, 1882,Carter County, Kentucky, to Samuel J, Evans. A child may not have been born to this union because Lodena died 14 months after she married. Lodena died May 10, 1883, probably Carter County, Kentucky because she is buried in the Bethel Cemetery located in Olive Hill, Carter County, where she is listed on William's family monument as Lodena, daughter of Wm. and N. Stamper. Sources: Marriage Certificate & monument SUSANNAH STAMPER "Susan" was born August 31, 1868, Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky. The 1870 and 1880 Carter County, Kentucky Census lists her as Susan and Susannah at age 1 and 11. The 1996 Bethel Cemetery listing has her listed as wife of W. J. Ervin. Susan married twice, first at age 16 at her father's home October 18, 1883, Carter County, Kentucky, to William Jason Ervin, a 22 year old farmer born about 1861, Carter County, Kentucky. Joseph Stamper and Sallie Stamper were witnesses to Susan's first marriage. Susan and William Jason apparently divorced or the marriage was annulled because both married a second time. Susan married a second time to W. James Sparkman "W. J." December 24, 1886, Rowan County, Kentucky, with her parents as witnesses. Susan's second marriage was less than two months old when death claimed herat age 19 on February 11, 1887, Carter County, Kentucky. Sources: Marriage Certificate , Cenus, William's will Granddaughter Gladys' Memories of Granny Cynthia Stamper A visit to Granny Stamper's in Kentucky, was always an adventure. Granny Cynthia, lovely called Granny, never cut her long straight black hair during her lifetime. Her younger grandchildren used to love to comb her hair and watch her shape her hair. She would braid her hair and wrap it around and around to a large round bun back of her head and hold it all together with large long bone hairpins. Granny Cynthia had a broken hip and she walked with a hand made crutch. She smokes a pipe and chewed tobacco. Granny Cynthia had a pet black snake named Old Joe. I remember her sitting in front of the fireplace with Old Joe wrapped around her shoulders and her hands petting him. Old Joe slept at her feet each night. She always kept lots of snakes in her smoke house, barn and storage areas to control the rats and mice. Granny's talents was many which included using God's earthly bounty which afforded her a rich full life. Granny believed in living off the land as fully as possible. She could can and preserve any thing including wild animals such as rabbit and squirrel. She had a cellar dug back into a hillside where she kept all her canned foods mostly stored from the earth's food chain. Granny loved but did not baby her grandchildren. During visits, she would assign each grandchild a duty to perform indoors or outside. At times we would have to pick fruit, berries, gather greens and spices, gather nuts and dig roots all from nature's abundances for use in her kitchen. She believed one should earn their meals. She was a wonderful cook and housekeeper in addition to being a super loving grandmother. When it was time to leave after a visit to her home, Granny would treat all the grandchildren to one can of what ever each wanted from her cellar. The grandchildren loved this and most time would picked a jar of her spiced peaches, the best in the world to them. I was 12 years old when Granny died and she is still missed . I love to tell my two children and my grandchildren about Granny. My memories of her are and always will remain in my heart until we can meet again in the presents of our Heavenly Father. Boarding at Granny Stamper's Cynthia Barbara Miller Stamper Samuel Harlen Erwin, at a very young age and while working at the mill, boarded with Granny Stamper in New Boston, Ohio, along with his brothers: Walter, Troy, Lloyd, and Frank Erwin. Granny Stamper was a widow renting out rooms in her home and her beds were very good and clean and they were always full. It was hard times them days and Granny would sleep the night workers in her beds during the day and sleep the day workers in the same beds at night. This was the way she made ends meet. She never made a big lot as everybody charged a dollar a day, that was the going rate all over. In those days, almost every house in New Boston kept one to four or five boarders. About everywhere, you had to put your suitcase and things under the bed because there were no closets. Granny's boarding house was tore down to build a funeral home about 1987 or 1988. Source: Samuel Harlen Erwin in his own words, March 1998 Granny Stamper's Cooking Sam Harlen said Granny could get up in the morning and fix a good breakfast for five or six boarders quicker than anybody. While the boarders ate, she would pack their lunch and she made a good sandwich. Granny made eggs, ham, bacon, biscuits and gravy, almost anything you would want. Sam said he boarded all over New Boston but Granny was the best. Not all boarding houses made your lunch and you didn't get much to eat. One place he boarded , the lady made three sandwiches out of one egg. He would take the egg off of two and throw away the bread. He then put all the egg on one sandwich in order to have a good sandwich.
