at one time had boarded in New Boston, Ohio, with Link's mother,

                                           A Visit With Samuel Harlen
Erwin

Betty (Stamper) Wellman and Gladys (Stamper) Meyers along with Glady's
husband Ralph Meyers visited Samuel Harlen "Sam" Erwin in March 1998,
to
obtain family information for a Stamper History. Two hours was spent
with Sam who was 92 but had the spirit, body and looks of a 70 year
old
and the memory of a much younger person. He still drives, lives alone,
does his own business. He spent the two hours relating what he
remembered about our parents, our Granny Stamper and other family
members
in addition to answering our many questions. He was taped during this
visit and the following paragraphs are written down as Sam's memories.
We
felt privileged to meet Sam and we were grateful for the time he gave
us.

Sam Knew Betty and Gladys' Parents
Sam personally knew Abraham Lincoln "Link" Stamper and Madeline
Gertrude
(Bronson) Stamper, the parents of Betty and Gladys. He also knew Betty
and Gladys' Granny Stamper, Cynthia Barbara (Miller) Harris Stamper, as
well as many of the Stamper relatives. Sam said Granny Stamper treated
him like a son and that she was well liked by everyone. He also said
that Granny chewed tobacco and that Link was pretty bad to drink as
most
were in those days. He had worked with Link at Olive Hill, Kentucky,
when they were young. He also knew about Link's twin sons and thought
the twins had died young. 9

                                          Boarding at Granny Stamper's
Sam Harlen at a very young age, while working at the mill, boarded with
Granny Stamper in New Boston, Ohio, along with his brothers: Walter,
Troy, Lloyd, and Frank Erwin. Granny Stamper was a widow renting out
rooms in her home and her beds were very good and clean and they were
always full. It was hard times them days and Granny would sleep the
night workers in her beds during the day and sleep the day workers in
the
same beds at night. This was the way she made ends meet. She never
made
a big lot as everybody charged a dollar a day, that was the going rate
all over. In those days, almost every house in New Boston kept one to
four or five boarders. About everywhere, you had to put your suitcase
and things under the bed because there were no closets. Granny's
boarding house was tore down to build a funeral home about 1987 or
1988.

                                              Granny Stamper's Cooking
Sam Harlen said Granny could get up in the morning and fix a good
breakfast for five or six boarders quicker than anybody. While the
boarders ate, she would pack their lunch and she made a good sandwich.
Granny made eggs, ham, bacon, biscuits and gravy, almost anything you
would want. Sam said he boarded all over New Boston but Granny was the
best. Not all boarding houses made your lunch and you didn't get much
to
eat. One place he boarded , the lady made three sandwiches out of one
egg. He would take the egg off of two and throw away the bread. He
then
put all the egg on one sandwich in order to have a good sandwich.

                                                  Sam's Wisdon Tooth
Sam's wisdom tooth story was funny to hear. He had a wisdom tooth
that
he was having an awful time as it hurt so bad. Sam was working at the
mill everyday but not sleeping much at night because the pain was so
bad.
Granny Stamper told him she could take care of that. She left the
room
and came back with a half pint of moonshine and he drank every bit of
it.
He stated "it didn't taste very strong" but he went to bed and didn't
wake up until the next morning. He didn't know where she got the
moonshine but she knew how to get those things because she knew
everybody. Sam later had the tooth cut out.

                                       Families Didn't Tell The Kids
Much
You know, in those days the family didn't tell the kids much. They
wouldn't tell us nothing unless you ask. You didn't hardly learn
anything til after we were grown. That's the way it was back then.
Kids didn't get much in them days. A lot of stuff we didn't have.
They
also whipped the kids pretty hard.

												10

Sam's Dad and Sister had a
Falling
Out
Sam related a story about his dad and sister falling out over a cow.
They never spoke the remainder of their life. Sam's dad was about 11
or
12 or maybe 13 and worked for farmers. They didn't pay in money but
gave you meat or food or something. Dad worked for old ?Polan?
Muskgrave. He gave my dad a calf and dad raised it to a cow and they
were milking it. It was a big help to feed the family. His sister got
mad and took the cow. They never did speak from that day on. They
both
died, dad died first and she never come to his funeral. One day in the
cemetery, a man and three women came along. I knew the man and two of
the women. We spoke and talked a little and they went on. One of the
women said "why didn't you speak to your aunt? I said "my aunt"?. The
women you didn't speak to is your Aunt Mint. I said, "I sure didn't
know
that". Mint married a Henry Davis. I said what is the deal here? I
ask mom and she told me the story about the cow. I never did go see
her
but my younger brother went once and Henry treated him okay but Mint
didn't treat him very good so he never went back.
