OLIVE HILL – Mr. James Lowe “J.L.” Cecil, age 50, of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday morning, April 25, 2007 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Cecil was born August 9, 1956 in Carter County, and is the son of Hubert Cecil of Olive Hill and the Late Charlotte Waye Lowe Cecil.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Chris and Effie Boggs Lowe; paternal grandparents, Shular and Josie Stratton Cecil;

mother and father in-law, Gene and Faith Valandingham Wilburn; and one sister in-law, Susie Wilburn Bond.

J.L. was the owner of Valley Metal Sales and attended the Three Pines Freewill Baptist Church in Olive Hill.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Linda Wilburn Cecil; two sons, Chase Cecil and Chance Cecil both of Olive Hill;

one sister and brother-in-law, Jenny Lou and Harvey Kiser of Olive Hill; two brothers-in-law, Keith and Rhonda Wilburn, and Gary Bond, all of Olive Hill;

sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Jim McCormick of Olive Hill; along with a host of extended family and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Bob Kazee and Brother Gary Sparks officiating.

Burial followed in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, in Olive Hill. Jeff Kiser, Steve Carroll, Paul Gilliam, Dexter Bradley, Daniel Jones, and Paul Steagall served as Pallbearers.

Donald Sturgill 1941 - 2003

Donald B. Sturgill, 62, of Grayson, KY, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 27, 2003, at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Don was born July 21, 1941 in Grahn, KY, a son of Charlie Andrew and Bethel Brown Sturgill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles Alcus and Kenneth Wade Sturgill.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Davis Sturgill, one daughter, Angela Dawn Ramey and her husband, Vernon Ramey and a granddaughter, Whitney Dawn Ramey all of Grayson.

Additional survivors include six sisters: Eloise Vowels of Louisville, KY, Vandetta Cox, Linda Valandingham and Treva Barker all of Olive Hill, KY, and Martine James and Susie Parker both of Grahn.

He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Don was baptized in September and loved to go to the Grahn Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

He was a graduate of Olive Hill High School and was retired from General Refractories at Hitchins, KY, where he worked for 35 years. He held various positions with his local union including President.

He was an avid outdoorsman and a past member of the Lunker Hunters Bass Club and the Trophy Hunters Archery Club. He enjoyed woodworking and supporting local basketball teams.

Joshua b.1788 d. aft. 1850, m/1 bef. 1814, wife unknown, they had 3 children, he m/2 Elizabeth ? on 2/11/1829 Bath Co., KY and they had Valentine b. ca. 1830, Malinda b. ca. 1835, Susannah b. abt. 1838 and Bluford b. ca. 1839. Joshua's father was Richard who d. 1811 left will Rockford Co., NC. Richard parents were George & Miss ? Brown, George's parents were Francis (1666 - 1740) and Elizabeth ?, and Francis's parents were Michael & Elizabeth. Michael bought 460 acres in Northumberland Co., VA in 1650, and a few years later young James Washington arrived in America and became a neighbor of Michael. James had a great grandson named George, sometimes called the father of our country. Note the Vanlandinghams arrived in America before the Washingtons. John Ross (b. 18 September 1754 in Prince William Co., VA) who was in the Rev. War. There was a Benjamin ROSS who left a will in Prince William Co. (This is from something that someone sent me, which I don't have right at hand, so I can't provide a date.) This Benjamin ROSS left his land in KY to a couple of his sons, one of whom was a John. A Benjamin ROSS patented land in Bourbon Co., KY.

The following article, serving as both obituary and news item, was the front page lead on the March 8, 1934 issue of the Bath County News-Outlook, published weekly on Thursday in Owingsville:

"Wounds Fatal to Vanlandingham: Son-in-Law, Charged With Shooting, Has Not Been Apprehended Richard O. Vanlandingham, 61 years old, who was shot about the head with a shot gun said to have been in the hands of his son-in-law, Harlan Petit, at the former's home in the Moore's Ferry section on the night of February 14 of this year, died at his home late last Friday night, March 2, from the effect of his wounds.

Petit was arrested after the shooting and held in jail here pending the action of the grand jury, [which] returned an indictment against him on a charge of shooting with intent to kill, and was released on bond for his appearance at the May term of court. At that time it was thought that Mr. Vanlandingham would recover. Since the death of Mr. Vanlandingham officers have been unable to locate Petit. His bondsmen, however, are said to have promised to produce him to answer a charge of murder. Mr. Vanlandingham was a native of this county and a member of a prominent and widely known family. He was a son of the late Stewart and Mary Ellen Vanlandingham, born March 1, 1873. Except for a few years spent in Fleming, his entire life was spent in Bath County. Besides his widow, Mrs. Kate Vanlandingham, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Mary Ford, New Castle; Ind., Mrs. Eliza Wells, Mrs. Bessie Spurlock, Mrs. Ollie Petit and Miss Nora Vanlandingham, all of this county, two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Razor and Mrs. Elizabeth Ingram, and five brothers, Walter, Johnson, William, Albert and Greenberry Vanlandingham. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, March 4, conducted by the Rev. H. S. Ficklin. Burial took place at the Hedricks graveyard."
