This indenture made and entered into by and between Reuben Ross & Rebecca Ross 
his wife the one part and Valentine Vanlandingham of the second part all of the 
County of Carter and State of Kentucky Witnesseth that for and in consideration 
of the sum of one hundred dollars in hand paid secured to be paid by note the 
parties of the first bargained and sold unto the party of the second part a 
certain tract of land lying and beng in the county and state afore said and on 
the head waters of Little Sinking Creek a branch of Little Sandy and bounded as 
follows to wit: Beginning at a hickory and chestnut on the north side of Sinking 
in line of John M. James survey N 57 W 48 poles to white oak N 42 E 73 poles to 
two black oaks and dogwood n 41 W 80 poles to one large red oak south 15  1/2 
poles to 3 white oaks S 9 1/2 E 42 poles to a sugar tree hickory and gum 
S 38 E 54 poles to a black oak & hickory S 73 E 29 poles to 2 hickories on a 
ridge N 15 E 34 poles N 30 E 26 poles to the beginning being the same land layed 
off to said Ross & his wife and deeded by the Commissioner appointed to lay off 
lands of George James dec. and containing by survey 85 acres be the same more or 
less and the parties of the first part do by these presents bargain sell and 
convey the above described land unto the parties of the second part and the 
parties of the first part do by these presents warrant and defend the title of 
said land uno the party of the second part for ever In testimony the parties of 
the first part have hereby set their hands and seals this 13th day of October 1856.

certify that this deed

from Ruben Ross & wife to Valentine Vanlandingham was produced to me in my office on the 
13th day of October 1856 and said Ruben Ross acknowledged his signature to be his act and 
deed hand and seal for the purposes therein mentioned and Rebecca Ross his wife was examined 
by me separate and apart from her husband and she on her own free will and consent relinquishes 
her right of dower to the within land and premises. and whereof the said deed together with 
this certificate are duly recorded in my office this 13th day of Oct. 1857
