Deed Book 7, Page 403

Deed of 75 acres executed on February 11, 1856

In this deed:

Grantors -

George James (Sept. 16/18, 1791 - Jan. 16, 1855), the deceased, believed to be the son of John W. James and Mary "Polly" Jackson
George B. James was married to Rebecca Zornes (1800 - ca1836) on July 15, 1816 and also to Sarah "Sally" Smith on Oct. 18, 1836

Margaret James - unidentified. On this same date, Margaret receives 95 acres under Deed Book 7, Page 589

M. E./S. James - unidentified. Note that women were rarely referred to by their initials.
William Riston James married Mary Elizabeth Ross. William was still living at the time of George's death,
so there is no reason to bequeath an interest to Mary and not William, unless George was not close to William for some reason.

Felona Wilena (James) Wilson (1836-1855) had a daughter named Mary E. James who was born in March 1854.
Felona was George's daughter and would have been a direct heir if she had not died soon after her father.
It is conceivable that Felona's share passed to her daughter Mary, and that is the interest being transferred here.

Emily James - unidentified. On this same date, Emily receives 68 acres under Deed Book 7, Page 627
George's brother, Bazel James, had a daughter named Emily James (1837 -). Emily was married three times and it may have been thought prudent
to make any bequest to her in her maiden name.

Amanda James - unidentified
George's brother, Bazel James, had a daughter named Amanda James (1841 -). George may have made a bequest to her in her maiden name.

Celie Wilburn - Celia (James) Wilburn (ca1828 - Feb. 15, 1861), a daughter of George James and wife of Reuben Wilburn
Rebecca Ross - Rebecca L. (James) Ross (Sept. 14, 1831 - April 21, 1882), a daughter of George James and wife of Reuben Truman Ross

Grantees -

Valentine Vanlandingham (b. ca1829), husband of Mary Ann (James) Vanlandingham and son of Elizabeth Vanlandingham & Joshua Vanlandingham
(Elizabeth's maiden name unknown, but it is clear that she was married previously to a Mr. Ross, who was the father of John Nelson Ross)

Mary Vanlandingham - Mary Ann (James) Vanlandingham, (ca1833 - ), daughter of George James and wife of Valentine Vanlandingham

.

This deed is somewhat unusual in that the married females are given inheritance rights in their own name.

It is also notable that George's sons, John M. James, Andrew Jackson James and William Riston James were still living, but were not mentioned in any deed of inheritance.

Soon after the settlement of this will, Reuben Truman Ross and Rebecca left Carter County to settle in Wilson County, Ks.

Note, two days later, John L. James and Emily James deeded 68 acres to Sarah James using Deed Book 7, Page 628.

Deed Book 6, Page 619 & Deed Book 6, Page 620 & Deed Book 7(?), Page 50 & Deed Book 7, Page 17 also deed property to George's heirs.

Deeds make references to "promises aforesaid", but no promises are made in the deeds. Hmmm.
