CHAPTER ONE

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM MCGLONE

JAMES

born: 1816
died: March 23, 1862
married: Susan Hunter on May 25, 1834

James was probably a twin to John of Chapter II . He married Susan on May 25, 1834, in Vigo County, and they were married by Preacher Denman. Susan was born in 1815 (7) in Kentucky and died in 1891 in Indiana. We are not sure when James went into Indiana form Ohio since no records indicate when that trip was made. He eveidently did not go wit his father on his inital trip. The 1840 Indiana Federal Census shows that he had three daughters livingin his home under five years of age, one son under 10 years of age. We know of 8 children he had and the dates do not necessarily coincide with the Census.

  1. Sarah was born in 1840 in Indiana
  2. James M. was born in 1844 in Indiana and died in 1863 in Danville, Kentucky.

CHAPTER TWO

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM McGLONE

JOHN

born: 1816
died: September 7, 1887
married: Hannah Akers on March 8, 1838

As we indicated in Chapter one, we believe John and James were brothers and probably twins. John was also born in Ohio, of course, and in the same year. He married Hannah Akers on March 8, 1838 in Vigo County and they were married by Preacher Sammuel K. Sparks. Hannah was born on July 31, 1816, in Kentucky and died on March 3, 1896. Both John and Hannah are buried at the McGlone Cemetery in Sullivan County, which is on the original tract of land settled by William. We describe the Cemetery a bit in Chapter VI. John and Hannah have stones there and in addition to the stones described in Chapter VI, these are all that we could find.

John's stone is as follows :
John McGlone
died: 9/7/1887
71 years old
married: Hannah
born: 7/31/1816
died: 3/3/1896

"His toiles are o er his work is done
and he is fully blest
He's fought the fight the victory won
and is laid into rest."

There is also a small stone which says "J. McGlone" which is probably a footstone.

Tombstone of John McGlone, Mcglone Cemetery, Sullivan County, Indiana.

Hannah's stone is as follows:
born: 7/31/1816
died: 3/3/1896

"Be ye also ready, for in such an hour
as ye think not,
the Son of Man cometh."

Tomestone of Hannah McGlone, McGlone Cemetery, Sullivan County, Indiana.

John and Hannah may have had eight children; we know of six.

  1. Joseph A. will be discussed in Section I.
  2. Nancy was born in 1843 and was married on August 2, 1893, at Terre Haute.
  3. Hannah R. was born in 1858 and married Joseph Cordry. Her marriage records show she was married on June 7, 1882, and also on June 7, 1882, and also on June 7, 1862. There could be an error here on either the marriage date or the birth date.
  4. John Riley will be discussed in Section II.
  5. William will be discussed in Section III.
  6. Aaron Stout will be discussed in Section IV.

Section I

Joseph Akers was a farmer and stock grower in Linton Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. He was born in Linton Township on January 27, 1842, the second of eight children (six we actually know of). Joseph was married three times, first to Mary Eliza Capple on December 23, 1866. Mary was born on November 12, 1850, and died on January 24, 1884. They had eight children. After Mary died, Joseph married Ann Jane Wheeler on January 27, 1885. Ann was born on October 22, 1844, and died on March 9, 1906. Joseph and Ann had two children. Joseph was reared on the farm and went to school in Linton Township. He enlisted in the Civil War in the Eighth Indiana Battery of Light Artillery on October 17, 1864, and was in Chattanooga when the War ended and was mustered out at Indianapolis on July 19, 1865, in the Seventh Battery. He was in the army hospital two months with the measles. He was a Master Mason and also served as a school director in his area. We know his wife Ann was a member of the Christian Church, so we have to assume he, too, was a member. Politically, he was a democrat. On September 1, 1906, he married Martha Elizabeth Railsback. She was born on August 299, 1853, in Vigo County. His 10 children are:

  1. Jacob Lem was born on February 24, 1869, and married Ellen E. Smith on June 26, 1894, in Indiana.
  2. Ida May was born on January 21, 1870, and married Levi Hall on March 10, 1888, in Indiana.

  9. Walter was born on September 13, 1884, and married Bertha M. Hauschild on January 16, 1909. We know of one son, Walter Merritt, born on July 13, 1917, and never married.
  10. Ira will be discussed in Section VI.

Section III

Some confusion exists here as too the William who was the son of John. We have a William marrying Missouri Hammond in Indiana on July 3, 1856, but this would make him quite young, even if he might have been born in 1838-40 area. We will list this William here not really knowing if he is the correct family or not.

Section IV

Aaron Stout was born in 1864 in Vigo County. He married Ada Ann Stutsman on November 9, 1884. They had one daughter, Eva, who married Herbert Hunt in 1909 in Sullivan County. Eva was born on October 1, 1888. We know Aaron’s grandfather was William who was the original William and he also had an uncle William who is discussed in Chapter VI.
