CHAPTER SIX

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM MCGLONE

WILLIAM S.

born: 1823
died: June 16, 1898
married: Margaret J. Mundall, Arabeller Dawson, and Mary J. Paulton

William S. was born in Vigo or Sullivan County, Indiana, in 1823. We know that he married Margaret J. Mundall and we also know that a William S. , born on the same day and year, married an Arabeller Dawson. We are assuming that it is the same William and will list here his families by Margaret and also by Arabeller. William married Margaret on February 6, 1842, in Indiana and they were married by Preacher Fraker. He died in 1898 and is buried in the McGlone Cemetery in Sullivan County, Indiana. This cemetery is located in Linton Township and is on the original tract of land settled by his father, William.

His tombstone is one of a very few in that cemetery and it is in an extremely bad state. The stones are all turned over and there is no fence around the ground, so it is doubtful if the stones will survive many more years. His stone has a saying on it as follows:

died: June 16, 1898
age 75 yr., 2 mo., 6 day
"Dearest father, thou hast
left us
And our loss we deeply feel
But ‘tis God that has (bereft) (this word not clear)
us
He can all our sorrows heal"

There is also a small stone that says "William McGlone’ and we believe it to be his footstone.

The other stones in this cemetery belong to the family of William. There is a small rectangular stone that says:

front - "children of William and M.J. McGlone"
"Not lost, but gone before."
one side - "Rachael A. born 8/31/1845
died: 9/8/1862"
one side - "infant son done 9/8/1859"

The other stone is a very small one and says R.A. McGlone. This is probably a footstone to Rachel.

Margaret was born in 1824 and died on December 17, 1910, in Linton Township, Indiana. I found no trace of Margaret’s tombstone in the cemetery, so we assume that she and William were divorced sometime between 1860 and 1872, when he married Arabeller. William and Margaret had 7 children:

  1. Rachel was born on August 31, 1845, and died on September 8, 1862.
  2. Mary Jane was born on October 10, 1846, and died on March 25, 1927. She married Nicholas Ring on March 29, 1866. She is buried at Prairie Creek Cemetery in Vigo County.
  3. Elizabeth was born in 1850 and married John W. Turner on October 8, 1874.
  4. Martha Ellen was born in 1852 in Indiana and married Nathan Kester on February 19, 1888.
  5. Marion will be discussed in Section I.
  6. Rosa was born in 1860 and married Virgil D. Hunt on October 13, 1885.
  7. Infant who died on December 8, 1859.

Arabeller Dawson was born in Sullivan County, Indiana, and she and William were married March 14, 1872. We do not know her death date, but she either died before 1893 or was divorced before that date. We know they had 3 children.

  1. Dillie A. will be discussed in Section II.
  2. Zeb Cleveland will be discussed in Section III.
  3. Oliver W. will be discussed in Section IV.

William S. married Mary J. Paulton of Ohio, on June 8, 1893. We feel certain that this is the same William because the records show his birthdate as 1823 and that he was a farmer. However, they do show that this was his first marriage! One reference lists her name as Mary L. Fry.
