As we indicated earlier, there are (were) many McGlones, whom we know very little about. Our research has proved sometimes fruitful, but in many cases we have run into the proverbial “brick wall” when we tried to complete the many families. Many letters have been sent to us and we have pieced some information together, but so much remains unanswered and we hope that someday someone will come along with additional data to complete the unanswered puzzles. There are so many John’s, James’, Peter’s, Michael’s, Mary’s, etc., that we cannot connect many of them without more information. In this part we sometimes can only mention names. Other times we can trace certain families, but can find out very little about them. For this reason, we choose to call this part - THE MISCELLANEOUS McGLONES.
McGLONE’S LAST SPREE A once prominent policeman dies in the City Prison
A badly battered man was brought into the Receiving Hospital last night at 7 O’clock and treated for alcoholism. His face was bruised and black and when the pump had removed a quart of beer from his stomach, he said that his name was Joseph McGlone, that he was a native of Scotland, 60 years old, a plumber by trade and that he had been a candidate for the State Senate. McGlone said that one week ago he had been clubbed in a saloon at 116 Third Street. A CALL reporter found that there is no saloon at that number, and no one knew the man who was said to be the owner. When the beer had been removed from McGlone’s interior department, he was sent down to the City Prison. Sergeant Linheinier refused to incarcerate him, because no charge had been made, and as he said, “this is no place for a sick man, but for criminals.” McGlone was placed upon a bench, where he lay gasping and groaning for several minutes. It was said that he was dying and a messenger was sent to the hospital for a doctor, but a physician could not be found at once. Dr. Magner, who was in charge of the hospital, was eating his dinner in a restaurant and when he arrived, McGlone was dead. The body was placed upon a stretcher and taken to the morgue. At the Receiving Hospital it was said that McGlone was suffering from alcoholism but it was found that he had erysipelas. McGlone was once well known among politicians and six years ago was a candidate for the State Senate but he was defeated. He had a plumbing shop at 116 Stevenson Street until one week ago. An inquest will be held this morning.
From the MORNING CALL, San Francisco, Thursday, May 26, 1892.
Additional information on Joseph McGlone as listed. From the San Francisco EXAMINER, Thursday, May 26, 1892.
In the pocket of Joseph McGlone, was a deed dated February 12, 1892, from Joseph to William D. Hobro, to 160 acres of land in Santa Clara County. Consideration was $250.

This story is based on the recollection of Mrs. Rex Simmons and was obtained from tape recordings made during hypnosis. The hypnotist was M. Bernstein who authored the book. It contains accounts of Mrs. Simmons in her previous life. She claimed to have been Bridget “Bridey” Murphy in an earlier life who lived in Ireland and was married to Brian MacCarthy. A Bridey Murphy MacCarthy was reported to have died in 1864 in Ireland. Mrs. Simmons was born in 1923 in the United States. The excerpt presented here had to have occurred after 1847 when Queen’s University adopted that name. This is an interesting story but has not been given much credence by the scientific community. It has been called “show business” which gives hypnotism a bad name.

“Well, now Queen’s University...Queen’s University was a Protestant school...and Brian, Brian was a Roman Catholic.
I know.
Well?
I know. He taught law, he didn’t teach religion.
And they had some...they had some Roman Catholics teaching there didn’t they?
Yes, several.
Several, hmmmmm? That I knew.
Several that you knew?
Yes.
Can you name just one?
Um-hmmm.
Who?
There was a fellow there. His name was William McGlone.
William McGlone? Yes.
M-c...G...that’s a large G.
Yes?
l-o-n-e.”
(interview by hypnotist and Ruth Simmons.)
“But as this is written, there has not yet been a search to determine whether the University has records of William McGlone...”

John was born in 1741 in Bally Bay, Ireland. He supposedly died in 1846 of starvation during the potato famine of that year. He had several sons, but we know of only two with any certainty:
1. A son was in the Corpus Christi, Texas area. 2. Edward was born in 1817 at Bally Bay, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died in 1901 in Iowa. If these facts are true, then John was 76 years old at the time of Edward’s birth. At this time we have been unable to confirm any of the above dates except through the original reference. Edward married Mary Smith at Bally Bay. she was born in 1842 and died in 1877. Edward came to America in the 1840’s settling first in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and then it is said, he went to Eastern Kentucky. He knew Mary in Ireland, but she was only a baby when he left there. We question Mary’s birth date and feel that 1830 is a more accurate date. They had at least five children and possibly six more: a. John James was born in August of 1852 in Hamilton. He died in 1934 in Oklahoma City. He married Marie Victoria Lange in 1892 in Hays, Kansas. Marie was born in 1855 in Missouri and died in 1947 in Oklahoma City. We believe he may have been a doctor in Kentucky, then some say he went to South Dakota and then to Kansas where he was a teacher. As a teacher in 1895 he made $21.00 per month, plus getting to live in the schoolhouse. They had 1 son: 1. John William was born on July 16,1895, in Hays, Kansas, and married Olevia Teola Kleymann in 1923 in St. Theresa, Kansas. He later married Jessie Frances Brown. Olevia was born in 1901 and died in 1936. We know of one son by Olevia and he had two others: a. William Anthony. b. John Phillip. c. Lawrence Henry. b. Francis died at the age of 42. He had a medical practice in Mason City, Iowa, and had two daughters. c. Teresa died in 1950. d. Sarah (Sister Octavia) died in 1946. She was a nurse at a hospital in Chicago. e. Daughter who died in 1933.
We have reason to doubt the total accuracy in this particular section. It does not seem logical that the dates listed are actually the true dates, but of course. the possibility does exist. We print it like our source presented it to us and ask that if any one who should read this book can correct any dates or names listed here, to contact us.

On April 11, 1980, we were privileged to meet Fred Arthur McGlone of Livonia, Michigan, and Fred passed on to us some information which was a bit sketchy up to this point. Fred is listed in ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SPORTS, by Frank G. Menke, p. 900, as the winner of the New York Marathon in 1942 and was the National AAU champion that year. Fred gave us the following information about his family. There were three brothers and Fred had been told they came from Ireland. As we discussed this, I suggested they may have been sons of Thomas listed in Section 83. The other listed men could possibly have been brothers of Thomas. Since we are striving for a printing deadline, we will leave this as speculation. The three brothers are:
1. Francis, who married Minnie Sullivan in Massachusetts. They had 9 children: a. Frank was killed in world War I and was a graduate of Colby. b. Fred Leo had 6 children: 1. Florence, born in 1912. 2. Marjory, born in 1914. 3. Rose, born in 1916. 4. Fred Arthur, born in 1918 5. Mary, deceased at age 50. 6. Helen, born in 1922. c. Lillian , now deceased. d. Arthur was killed in World War I and is buried in France. e. Agnes, now deceased. f. Albert, now a dentist in Washington, D.C. g. Nellie, now deceased. h. Daughter who lives in Massachusetts. i. This group is handled with some speculation on our part. Some of the groupings may not be correct, but the dates we have seen to tie the families in. We do apologize if an error has been made. Charles was born in 1833 in Ireland. He eventually moved to Mercer County, Kentucky. Our belief is that Charles was also called Arter. Charles had 2 sons:
1. Arthur T., who we believe was called Thomas, was born in Kentucky in 1875(6) and married Sarah McChristie. Thomas was buried in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery in 1938, which is in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky. Sarah was born in 1878 and died in 1946. They had 4 children: a. Bridget was born on June 4, 1922, in Mercer County. b. Margaret Norine was born on August 24, 1913. c. Cleo was born on July 5, 1916, in Carter County, Kentucky. d. James M. was born in 1925. 2. Martin, who we believe was called Matt, was born on March 17, 1877, in Mercer County, Kentucky. He died on April 26, 1939, and is buried at the St. Nicolas Catholic Cemetery. Matt married Artie Mercie Noel on January 1, 1911, in Mercer County. They had 3 children: a. Ethel Dalena was born on September 26, 1913, in Mercer County. b. Cecil M. was born on June 21, 1914, in Mercer County and married Madeline Powell. c. Robert F. Hardin was born on August 21, 1916.
Our information is that Matt was the son of Arter and Sarah Belle Huff, so indeed some confusion does exist.

Charles was born in 1837 in Sommerville, Massachusetts. He was wounded at Gaines Mill, Virginia. By profession, he was a glassblower. Thomas was born in 1826. He lived in Natick, Massachusetts. He was wounded in 1863 and discharged. He was a shoemaker. Michael was born in 1835 in Quincey, Massachusetts. He was wounded and died in 1864 in Bell Plains, Virginia. He was a stonecutter. Hugh was born in 1840 in Milford, Massachusetts, and was killed in the Army in Virginia. He enlisted in 1861 and was a boat maker by trade. There is a possibility that this Hugh is the same as the Hugh mentioned in Section 84. Our only reason for this is that they both enlisted in 1861, and are from Massachusetts.
These five men are grouped together for no reason other than they are from Massachusetts and served in the Civil War. The possibility exists that they are related.

It is interesting to note that there were several McGlones in Detroit from mid-1860’s on. We can find no record of where these McGlones came from, but it probably was from the Ohio area. This is purely speculation, but until we can find more information, we will assume it is correct. It is highly probable that they were from the same family and there were some marriages in the area. There was a Francis J. in Detroit in 1919, but we do not believe he was the same Francis J. that was married in Rhode Island in the early 1900’s. We are listing the information as we were able to locate it in the Detroit Library.
1. William McGlone was employed at the Detroit and Milwaukee Depot. He was accidently crushed to death in the yards on either May 2, 1864, or June 1, 1864. Reference: 203. 2. Eliza McGlone sold vegetables at the C & H Market at 69 Clinton, Detroit in 1876. This was the only reference we had to an Eliza. She could have possibly been William’s wife and may have died soon after this. 3. In 1878 and 1879, there was a William McGlone who was a huckster at the C & H Market and he could have been a son of number one above. Joseph was listed as a laborer and a John J. was a telephone operator for the Grand Western Railroad Freight Office. He lived at 316 Fort Street, Detroit. I believe John J. may have been a son of number one above. 4. In 1880, Joseph was a huckster at the C & H Market. He lived at 30 Bates, Detroit. Mary was listed as a domestic at the Collins House. Thomas was a porter at Voorhees and Company. 5. In 1881 Joseph was listed as a laborer. 6. In 1882, Mrs. Delia McGlone was in millinery and she lived at 351 Fort St., Detroit. John was a telephone operator and was Delia’s husband. 7. In 1883, Delia was listed as handling notions and John was still listed as a telephone operator with Wabash, St. Louis & P Railroad. Joseph was still listed as a laborer and lived at 28 Hastings St. Sarah was a waitress at the Antisdel House and Thomas was a clerk with J.A. Schmid. 8. In 1888, John was listed as handling notions, John J. was with the Wabash railway. Joseph died on July 11, 1887. 9. In 1891, it appears that most of the family moved to 400 Congress Street, Detroit. 10. In 1904, Helen E. was a bookkeeper with John J. Sullivan. 11. In 1905, new McGlones appearing in the records were: George, living at 287 Chene; Henry, living at 48 Madison; and Nellie E., working at Parke Davis. 12. After 1905, others came upon the scene. We know nothing about these, but we are sure they are members of the same family. Surprisingly enough, we could find no information about these early McGlones from our Detroit sources, but we did get very little cooperation from some of the families. Hiram was a laborer; Josephine L. was a clerk; Albert C. was a cook; John J., Jr., was a clerk; Cora was a seamstress; John N. was a clerk; William was a switchman; Francis J. was an accountant; George M. was an engineer; and Patrick was a metalworker.

James McGlone was from Polkton, Michigan, and enlisted in Company G, 21st Infantry on August 2, 1862, at Eastmanville for three years. He was born in 1842. He was a part of the Corps of Color Guards in 1864 and was a sergeant when mustered out at Washington, D.C., on June 8, 1865. Eastmanville is a small town just west of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and we have no idea how James got to this town. We have no records of any McGlones in this area in this time period, although they may have been there in the lumber business.
