1877 Eli Hayes map of the Portsmouth-Northern Kentucky area
The contemporary Tygarts Creek channel has been straightened to join the Ohio River by a more direct route.
In its natural state, Tygarts Creek had been deflected to the west by sediment deposited by the larger river.
On the map below, true north is to the upper left (the direction from which the Scioto River flows).
Note the Ohio Canal joining the Scioto River just above its confluence with the Ohio River
Also the "Broom Factory" in West Portsmouth and the path of Tygarts Creek just before it flows into the Ohio River.
