Civil War pension affidavit signed by Matilda McGinnis and Rachel Montgomery.

Submitted by: Sherry Lowe

The affidavit says "In the matter of Pension claim of Vandres Burress as I learn was a Private in Company D....."

I submit that the claimant was actually Pvt. Sanders Burris. Sanders lived in the same neighborhood as the two ladies who signed the affidavit and the
information given fits much of the information contained in the 1890 Carter Co., KY Special Veterans Census including the company and date of discharge.

Editor's Note: The fact that the ladies got Sanders' name so wrong really makes this a very living and "human" document. The ladies probably knew Sanders by his nickname, and had never seen his full name in writing. Sanders may have been in general ill health or for some reason did not speak clearly when he gave his proper name to the ladies. It's surprising that the Civil War pension processing office was able to interpret the affidavit correctly. But then, in those days, spelling errors on documents like these were no doubt commonplace.
