Carter Co. Herald 29 Oct 1914

Saturday, Oct. 24th will long be rememberd by relatives, friends and neighbors at a suprise
birthday dinner at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Jarvis, it being Mr. Jarvis' 65th
birthday. He had been so busy during the week with his work that he had not even thought
of it being his birthday, and in the morning had visited Robert Whitt who was ill. On his return
home he was amazed at the number of visitors - but still they kept coming with baskets filled
with good things to eat, until forty-seven were present (besides the children) and the table fairly
groaned under the weight of the delacacies spread. When the noon hour arrived all gathered in
the parlor, where, with the skilled musician, Mrs. W.B. Whitt presiding at the organ they sang the
old family hymn "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound". After scriptural reading and prayer by
his son, Rev. Arthur Jarvis all again joined to sing that song that never grows old "Sweet Bye and Bye"
May the dear old father as his hair is frosting in the winter of life, live to enjoy many more happy
birthdays, but this one with him will never be forgotten and may his last days on earth be his
happiest. Many nice and useful presents were received.

Editorial note: John Sanders Jarvis was born on Oct. 24, 1849. He was married to (1) Rachel Ellen Ross & (2) Katherine Phillips. John died on January 29, 1935. "Robert Whitt" may be Robert T. Whitt, born March 18, 1863 in Carter Co., KY, the son of Edmund and Mary Jane (Rice) Whitt.
