Mr. Garell Bernard Armstrong, age 100, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday afternoon, 
April 8, 2015, at his sister’s residence.
He was born Dec. 19, 1914, in Carter County, a son of the late Frank and Mabel Moore Armstrong.
Garell joined the Army on Dec. 3, 1942, and was Honorably Discharged on Nov. 27, 1945, following the end 
of WWII, having attained the rank of Technical Sargent. Garell married Denver Sparks on July 24, 1944. 
They were married for 55 years until her death in 1999. He was of the Christian faith and was a member 
of the Grace Brethren Church in Mansfield, Ohio, and after returning to Olive Hill after his wife’s 
passing, he attended the United Methodist Church. He will always be remembered for his magnetic personality 
and he could draw you in with his amazing smile.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Denver Sparks Armstrong; two brothers, 
Elden "Curly" Armstrong and Oval Armstrong; and one sister, Lendel Armstrong Tolliver.
Garell is survived by one son, John (Joyce) Armstrong of Dallas, Texas; one grandson, 
John Christopher (Sherry) Armstrong of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Thelma Armstrong Hillman of Olive Hill; 
three nephews, Keith Hillman of Olive Hill, Tom Armstrong of Marion, Ohio, and Larry Tolliver of 
Maderia, Florida; and five nieces, Roberta Hillman of Olive Hill, Yvonne Brown of Louisville, 
Virginia Wilhauks of South Fulton, Tennessee, Sandra Armstrong Collins of Olive Hill, and 
Judy Armstrong Sheets of Raeford, North Carolina. He also leaves behind several extended family members 
along with his two caregivers, Theresa Jordan and Mona Barker, both of Olive Hill, and a host of friends 
as well as his two favorite companions, his dogs Molly and Mindy, who will sadly mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the Olive Hill United Methodist Church 
with Brother John Lambert and Brother Bob Burton officiating. Burial will follow in the 
Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olive Hill, with full military honors presented by the 
Olive Hill American Legion Post No. 138.
Friends may visit from 11 a.m. until the service hour at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the 
Olive Hill United Methodist Church.
