Kentucky GenWeb projectSylvia M. Scherer Sylvia M. Scherer, 91, a lifelong resident of Belle, passed away March 6,2007, in McDonough, Ga., where she lived with her daughter for the last six years. She was born on July 15, 1915, in Olive Hill, Ky., to the late David and Lula Bowling. The family moved to Ohley (Cabin Creek) W.Va., in about 1923. Sylvia was a graduate of East Bank High School and Little French Beauty Academy in Bluefield, former owner and operator of Victory Beauty Shop in Eskdale, and member of the Ruth Class at Judson Baptist Church, Belle View Garden Club, Belle Women's Club, Quilting Clubs at the Belle Methodist Church and Judson Baptist Church, member of AARP and attended exercise classes in Belle until she moved to Georgia when she was 85 years old. She was a former Brownie and Girl Scout Troup Leader, Girl Scout Day Camp Site Chairman, Certified Red Cross swimming instructor teaching classes at the YWCA in Charleston and at the Dupont Hunting and Fishing Club at Poca. She also taught synchronized swimming at the Y and was former board member of the YWCA. She was preceded in death by son, Gavin Lee Scherer in March 1958 and husband, Emerson Lee Scherer in September 1978. She is survived by daughter, Carla Jo Hall of Mcflonough, Ga.; grandson, Brian Swadley and his wife, Michelle, of Stockbridge, Ga.; great-granddaughters, Heather Swadley at University of Georgia, Athens, Ga., Hannah Swadley of Stockbridge, Ga., Whitney Brewer of McDonough, Ga.; great-grandson, Christopher Brewer of Stockbridge, Ga.; sister, Mary Duffle of Eskdale and Scott Depot; brother, Franklin D. Bowling and his wife, Ket, of New Jersey; brother- in-law, Bob Cain of Michigan, and Jesse Farrell of Virginia; nieces, Marlene (Patty) Perry (and Sylvia's sister Mary Duffie's caretaker) of Scott Depot, Joyce Hughes of Florida, Jan Moijis and Judy Mitchell of Charleston, Nancy Starkey, Donna Sue Hernn of West Virginia, and Lori Dixon of Florida; nephews, Mike Duffie of Charleston, Gary and Robert Bowling of Florida, and Nick Ferrell of West Virginia. Special recognition to Ethel Jackson, longtime friend and neighbor. Mama considered you one of her sisters. Sylvia was loved by all that knew her and enriched so many lives. She was very proud of her accomplishments and took a special joy in teaching kids to swim. Special thanks to great-granddaughter Whitney's fiancé, Steven Cannon as Mania fondly called him “The Tall Guy” and to Allen D. Hall for all his help and special kindness to Mama. She loved the flowers and candy you always brought her. Memorial service will be held at the Judson Baptist Church, Belle, Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Charles Bolen.
