Kentucky GenWeb projectAged Veteran Passes Away - Uncle John Burchett, of Upper Tygart, born in the east end of this county, 83 years ago, and raised on Smoky Valley until a few years ago, when he moved to the place where he departed this life, was well known and loved by all who knew him. He was a soldier in the Union Army of the Civil War and raised a family of seven children, four girls and three boys, all of whom survive him. His good wife had gone on before him but a few years ago and was waiting for him on the other shore. He had beeen a man of real nerve, always being a hard worker, for many years a blacksmith by trade, shoeing horses and any other kind of work which might fall to his lot. He was a good liver and was very fond of bees, selling several pounds of honey in this city during the past few years. He had been sick but about two weeks, which seemed to be infirmities of age which caused his death. He passed away Saturday morning and his funeral was preached Sunday morning at 10 o'clock by Rev. W. P. Stamper, a former neighbor of Smoky Valley, who knew his life as he had lived it, and it was an easy task to preach a funeral of one whom he had known and how he had lived it. Mr. Stamper paid some high tributes to this noble man. After the funeral services the remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Bowen Cemetery.
