Ella Gay Speaks 1914-2006
Ella Gay Speaks, 91, of Ashland, a former resident of Oakmont Manor Nursing Home, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, in the Hospice Care Center.
She was born Nov. 25, 1914, in Hazard, Ky., the daughter of the late Thomas Arthur and Sophia Barger Gay.
She was a retired sales associate for J.C. Penney Company, as well as GNC. She was also a member of Second Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. She volunteered at King?s Daughters Medical Center, King?s Daughters and Sons Home, Kentucky Highlands and the Ashland Public Library.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Louis Sparks; one sister; and three brothers.
Mrs. Speaks is survived by two daughters, Nancy McClure and husband Thomas of Union, Ky., and Cindy Lynn Hall and husband David of Wayland, Ky.; two sons, Charles Philip Speaks and wife Patricia of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Jim Speaks and wife Brenda of Grayson, Ky.; two sisters, Nancy Gay Ritchie of Pikeville, Ky., and Catherine Gay Spurlock of Clemson, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. Edgar ?Pete? Miller, Brother Ed Caudill and Brother Harry Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Baptist Church, 4950 Williams Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
