Peter John Thompson Maj. Peter John Thompson (Ret.), 56, died on Saturday, October 16, 2004 in University of Virginia hospital. Born November 29, 1947 in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Florence Goal Ostapowicz of Olive Hill, Ky., and the late Leo P. Thompson. Peter was a retired Major of the United States Army Special Forces (Delta Force) having served three tours in Vietnam, and served in Granada, and the Iran Hostage rescue attempt. He was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and V device, and the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of the Defense Language Institute with proficiency in Persian-Farsi. Peter also taught at the Army-Navy Military Academy in Carlsbad, Calif., and was a member of the American Legion in San Diego, Calif. In more recent years he was a Government Contract Consultant for HUMCO. He was also a member of Saint John's Catholic Church in Encinitas, Calif. In addition to his mother, Peter is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Thaxton and her husband, Tony of Crozet, Va., and Maria Kathryn Thompson of Encinitas, Calif.; three sons, Peter John Thompson Jr. and his wife, Karen of Denver, Colo., Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Wayne Thompson and his wife, Wendi of Meridian, Miss., and Matthew David Thompson of Encinitas, Calif.; two sisters, Barb Bengela and her husband, Mick of Toledo, Ohio, and Sue Linden of Knoxville, Tenn.; one brother, Sam Thompson and his wife, Bonnie of Olive Hill, Ky.; five grandchildren, Brooke, Brandon, Olivia, Peyton and Davis; Janet Tucker, the mother of Peter, Patrick and Jennifer; and Pamela Pulido, the mother of Matthew and Maria. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins and Father Thomas Blau officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 with the recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m. The family suggests that desired memorial contributions may be made to the DAV Charitable Service Trust, 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076, Disabled Veterans Fund.
