Richard Douglas Davis Sr..
"This is my g-g-grandfather, Judge Richard Douglas Davis (1844-1913) of Carter and later Boyd Co.. This must have been taken sometime in the 1860s, and was possibly a high school or college photo, from the collection of George Vroom Davis".

Richard Douglas Davis Sr., seated.
Standing is his son, Richard Douglas Davis II, born 15 July 1885 in Carter Co, died July 1970 in Boyd Co..
The baby is Richard Douglas Davis III (1909-1990), who was to become a Lt. Commander in the US Navy.
Photo was probably taken between 1910-1913, possibly at Huntingdon, WVa.

Photo is courtesy of William Fitzrandolph 'Randy' Davis.

Richard Douglas Davis III was a nephew of RDD jr. and a son of his brother, Capt. Roscoe Conkling Davis, USN., (1878, Carter Co., - 1962.)

Note from the contributor:

"If you look up elected officials of carter county on the genweb site, you will see Judge Robert D. Davis (also as City Attorney and State Representative). According to my information (my grandfather's notes and richard's obituary), this would have actually been Richard.

Notice Elias P. Davis in the list. This was Capt. Elias P. Davis of the Kentucky 40th, Richard's father.

Note Watson Andrew Davis, elected Judge in 1906. This was Richard's brother. According to my grandfather, both he and Richard (in Boyd Co.) won by a landslide. Watson married Castaria Pritchard of Carter Co., but they had no children. Note also Watson's birth in 1852 in the Carter Co. birth records on the genweb site.

If you look at the photo of the original Carter County Courthouse in your photos, it shows on the left, a 'Watt David'. This may have actually been Judge Watson Andrew 'Watt' Davis. Watson and Richard had a sister, Elizabeth, who married Capt. George Littlejohn of the Grayson Home Guard, and another named Mary 'Mollie' who married H. B. Litteral, and lived in Carter Co..

These families can be found in the 1880 Carter Co. census."
