Ruby (Davis) Burnett Mrs. Ruby Davis Burnett was recently honored with a birthday party at her home at Iron Hill. The occasion was the 93rd birthday she was to celebrate. A total of 57 family members stopped by for lunch and well wishes. Mrs. Burnett was born on the western side of Carter Co., in a small community known as Wesleyville, the daughter of Elbert (1885- 1965) and Dovie Erwin (1894-1980) Davis. Mrs. Burnett met and married her late husband, William “Willie” Burnett (1911-1977), the son of Henry (1872-1965) and Lucy Wicker (1878-1915) Burnett, and they had six children, Maxine Burnett (m. Kenneth Mullins), Russell Burnett (m. Fern McGinnis), Bill Burnett (m. Betty Burnett), Everett Burnett (m. Sue Foster), Patsy Burnett (m. Luke Back) and Carl Burnett (deceased). Mrs. Burnett has a total of 15 grandchildren (1 deceased), 29 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren (1 deceased). Even at the age of 93, Ruby still makes sure that after Church each Sunday, lunch is prepared for the family. She now does allow a couple of the family to assist her each week with the dinner, but only because she says she is training them. Her dinners are a feast to behold. Besides one or two meat entrees, there is always a large pot of brown soup beans, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, white gravy, biscuits, cornbread and a host of other foods. No one has ever left the home of Ruby Burnett hungry, and she is well known for her wonderful cooking. Until arthritis made too difficult for her pull the candy, Ruby was widely known for her cream candy. Each piece was a work of perfection that would melt in your mouth. Ruby is a Christian and a member of Carter Christian Holiness Church at Carter City, where she has attended for nearly 50 years. Ruby’s love for God and for her family makes her modest little home come alive with laughter and joy each week as her family gathers around her to discuss the events of the past week and plans for the next. She is truly a delight to all who know her.Written and contributed by Sherry Lowe
