Riley was John's nephew.
John Milton Phillips was born July 31, 1885 in Carter County near Olive Hill. He was the son of Stanford "Stant" Phillips and Sarah Patton. His siblings included Thomas Wesley, Molly, Laura, William, Elizabeth, Dora, Shannon, Baliem, and Watt. According to John's diary of 1917 he was 5'4" tall and weighed 130lbs and was the owner of no less than 12 guns. John married Letha King who was born November 5, 1898 in Carter County, daughter of Charles King and Lillie Salyers. John and Letha were married before 1920 in Carter County.
Together they had the following children:
1) Charles "Bun" (died as a child),
2) Irene (died as a child),
3) Meda,
4) Joyce, and
5) Janice.
John worked on his father's farm until the late 1910s. After that
he worked at the brickyard in Carter County. Sometime around 1925,
John and Letha moved to Kanawha County, WV where John worked in the coal
mines. He died May 20, 1938 at Kanawha Valley Hospital in Charleston,
WV. He was buried May 23, 1938 in Fultz, Carter County at the King
family

Riley Jessie was the son of Cowan Jessie and Molly Phillips.
Molly Phillips was the sister of John Phillips. Riley
was born in 1897 and married Nellie ??? sometime before 1917. We
know of at least 2 children, there may have been more. Letha Jessie
was born in 1917 and Archie was born in 1919.
