Sidney A. Johnson

This photo was probably taken in Stark, Elliott County, KY, in 1901-02 just prior to the family moving to Crandon, Forest County, WI.

Left to Right:

Bessie Johnson. Bessie married George Palmer, from Breathitt County, KY. They ran a large logging operation in Forest County, WI.

Sidney A. Johnson. Sidney was born in 1867 and died in 1912 in Crandon, WI, of tuberculosis. He was the son of Hugh (1840-1912) and Barbara (Porter) Johnson (b. 1843) of the Mauk Ridge area of Carter County, which became part of Elliott County in 1869. Hugh Johnson and four of his brothers were Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

Mattie Marie Johnson. Mattie was born in 1899 and died April 3, 1963 (my grandmother). Mattie married James Barker (1892-1977) in Crandon, WI, in 1913. James was also from Elliott County.

William Johnson. William was killed in logging mill accident. He never married.

Anna Laura (Thompson) Johnson. Anna was born in 1870 in Elliott County, and died in 1964 in Crandon, WI. She was the daughter of William A. "W.A." Thompson (1843-1924), who was from Bruin, Carter County. During the Civil War, W.A. Thompson was a Confederate soldier, serving with the 5th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and later served alongside Hugh Johnson in Capt. William Jason Field's Company of Kentucky Partisan Rangers. He later built home in Stark, Elliott County, and served as county sheriff. Several years after Sidney died in 1912, Anna Laura moved back to Stark, KY, and married Willis Harper. In the 1940's she returned to Crandon, WI, to be near her children and grandchildren. In this photo she is expecting with another son, Russell Johnson, born in 1902 and died in 1943. Russell married Opal Hall of Olive Hill. This family lived in Olive Hill for a time.

Carrie Johnson. Carrie died in 1918 in Crandon, WI, during the great influenza outbreak. She married Park Lawson.
