On November 1, 2009 you posted a photo of Georgia (Ely) Madden and her granddaughter Mary Francis Keith that was originally furnished by Geraldine Bradley of Grayson. I did some research on this family in the past and thought you might want to post this with the photo. These notes include a very nice letter from Chloe Madden Keith to me in 1974. Chloe was a daughter of Geraldine Madden and the mother of Mary Francis Keith. Based on the date of Mary Francis Keith’s birth and Geraldine’s death I suspect the photo dates to about 1935, give or take a year or so. James Franklin Madden Son of Matthew Madden Grandson of Jonathan Great granddaughter of Nathan Brother of David Otho Madden James Franklin Madden was born on September 16, 1876 at Pleasant Valley now known as Counts Cross Roads.[1] On December 6, 1895 Frank Madden and Georgia Ely were married. Their surety was H. L. Turner. Actually their marriage bond or license was issued on December 6 in Rowan County and the return filed on December 8, 1895, also in Rowan County . It is not known if they were actually married on the 6th, 7th or 8th, without seeing the actual paperwork.[2] At one time James Madden was also the Sheriff of Soldier, Kentucky according to his son Clyde . In his 1882 interview Clyde said this was about 65 years ago which would have made it about 1917, give or take. 1900 Federal Census Carter County , Kentucky Magisterial District # 4, June 18, 1900 284/29 Frank Madden Sep 1875 24 Married 4 yrs. We don’t get to Kentucky very often as my husband don’t drive on trips anymore we were down last July as his older Bro died but my son and daughter drove us down. My Dad often spoke of your Grand Pa and wondered about him and at one time around 19 or 20 I got the name of one of the girls from a paper I wrote her she answered and sent me a picture then I left Soldier and went to Ashland to work, met my husband there and about 6 yrs later we came to Michigan and lost contact. There are some children of each one of my uncles still living but I never knew any of the Estill’s, I always felt sorry that I never knew my grand parents, my grandmother on my mothers side died when I was about 9 yrs. old my mother’s maiden name was Ely and her mother was a Reeder or Reader (I can’t remember which) the old timers are gone but some of the descendants are still around there I have not seen them in years. I hope you can get all the information you need, my bro Cleff said your Mom was still living, I would so love to hear from her. I wonder if she could be the one I wrote to in Texas . If I can help in anyway I would be pleased to do so. Would love to hear from your or any of the family Mrs. Ross Keith 116 Batavia St . River Rouge , Mich. 48218 Based on the available records it appears that James Franklin Madden and his wife Georgia Ely Madden had the following children. (1) Claude William Madden October 10, 1898 to March 31, 1966 (2) Chloe Madden November 16, 1900 to August 20, 1986 (3) Clyde A. Madden September 9, 1902 to October 14, 1999 (4) Laura Madden July 27, 1904 to January 25, 1987 (5) Cleff Madden May 18, 1906 to October 22, 1993 (6) Pearl Madden April 10, 1910 to April 15, 1914 (7) Mable C. Madden July 29, 1912 to April 8, 1993 (8) Irene Madden March 5, 1915 to March 5, 1915[6] This would seem to agree with a letter from Cleff Madden to David K. Tucker dated March 10, 1974. In that letter Cleff stated, “I have one brother living ( Clyde ) & 3 sisters (Chloe, Laura, and Mable) & one brother dead (Claude) and two sisters (Pearl & Irene)”. The names in parentheses are mine. This accounts for 7 plus Cleff which makes eight children. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] The 1900 census shows his year of birth as 1875 but his death certificate gives the year as 1876. His son Clyde Madden, in an oral interview for the Kentucky Historical Society, gives his fathers place of birth as “outside of Olive Hill, at Pleasant Valley ”. [2] ROWAN COUNTY MARRIAGES on USGen.Web. The bond or license is filed in Book 2 Page 186 and the return in Book A Page 97. [3] Her maiden name shown on her daughter Pearl ’s death certificate is “George Ann Ely”. [4] Otto is buried in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery which is listed on the Carter County Web Site and his tombstone gives the date of their marriage. It is presumed that she is also buried there, but if so her name and dates are not shown on the stone. [5] Kentucky Oral History Commission, Carter County Oral History Project, Clyde Madden, 1976OH22.8, March 13 1982. In this interview Clyde states that his wife’s maiden name was “Patton”. [6] Irene’s actual Dead Certificate is shown on the Kentucky Vital Records Project and shows that she was “stillborn due to premature birth” and was buried in Patton Cemetery .
