"This is a photo of William Henry Harrison Lewis, my gr gr grandfather. I found the picture last year in Henry H. Wells' " Descendents of Thomas Lewis and Hannah Hopkins Vol. 2." I corresponded with Mr. Wells' daughter, Henrietta (Wells) McKinney, who was kind enough to send me a little clearer picture of him. I do not know how she obtained the picture."
WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON LEWIS, born February 14, 1813, Floyd, KY., died August 19, 1895 at Wyatt Post Office, Elliot Co., KY., married ELIZABETH HENRY, December 25, 1834, Blaze, KY, Morgan County. Elizabeth Henry, born 1817, died 1892. Joseph Nickell performed the marriage ceremony on his estate
*William Henry Harrison married Polly Hitch. They were married by Marriss Crips at his home. No children are listed on WHH Lewis’ pension records.
**WHH and Elizabeth were divorced March 17, 1855.
*During the War Between the States, William H. H. Lewis served as a private in Company A, 54th Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry, September 14, 1864 – September 1, 1865. * He was honorably discharged September 1, 1865 at Louisville, KY, He was 5’ 7 ½” tall with a fair complexion, light colored hair and blue eyes. He was in excellent health when he joined the 54th Mounted KY vol.Sept, 1864. He took sick with fever Dec. 1864 at Bean Station, TN. Was in the hospital in Lexington then rejoined the army agian at Shelbyville, KY for 3 months. He was honorably discharged Sept. 1, 1865. He suffered greatly through the remaining years of his life with the effects of the mercury that was left in his system from treatments he received while in the army and from rheumatism and a urinary problem.
***Two of his sons James and Leander also served as privates with him in the 54th during this same time. A third son, John T. served with Company B, 24th Kentucky Infantry, December 31, 1861 – December 31, 1864.

Operating against guerrillas in Henry County, Kentucky until December 1864. Raid into Southwest Virginia December 10-29, 1864. Near Marion, Virginia, December 17-18, 1864. Saltsville, Virginia, December 20-21. Captured and destroyed salt works. Provost duty in country about Lexington, Kentucky, and operating against guerrillas until September, 1865. Mustered out September 1, 1865, at Louisville. Regiment lost during service 1 Enlisted man killed and 29 Enlisted men to disease. Total 30.
