He was the son of William S. Rice and Mary "Polly" Haney

Mary was born in 1849 or 1865 in Greenup Co, Ky.
She was the daughter of Hiram Campbell and Rachel McGinnis.

Hiram Campbell was the son of Jesse Campbell and a brother of Dr. Thomas Jefferson Campbell.
