Samuel Wilcox was born on 7 March, 1821 in Owsley Co., KY, a son of Isaiah and Fannie (Greer) Wilcox. He was raised in Ashe Co., NC, where he married Barbara Houck (1814-1893) on 22 August, 1839. In 1850, Samuel and Barbara moved from NC to Pike Co., KY, where they lived for twelve years. In 1862, they moved to Carter Co., KY, where they settled on Deer Creek. On 1 October, 1862, Samuel and his son, Francis Marion Wilcox, enlisted in Co. D. 40th KY Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. Samuel Wilcox died from pneumonia at Paris, KY, while still in service, on 15 March, 1864. He was first buried in his Army uniform in what became the Wilcox Cemetery at Deer Creek. In the 1960s, the graves of the Wilcox family members buried at Deer Creek--including Samuel Wilcox-- were removed to East Carter County Memory Garden in Grayson.
