Smith Branch Schoolhouse

"The Smith Branch school was located on Route 60 just west of Smith Branch. in Gregoryville. It was often referred to as the Gregoryville school.

It was a two room school. Grades one through four went in the back classroom and five through eight (the upper classmen :) in the front.

Water was supplied the old fashioned way with the well shown in the picture.
The rooms were heated with coal stoves augmented by wood supplied by the eighth grade boys who were sent,
gleefully, to forage for it a few times a week.

I went to the eighth grade there in 1957. The teacher was Mrs. McGuire a wonderful, tolerant lady.

Pictures are courtesy of Tommy Joe Sweeney my eighth grade schoolmate. Tommy Joe went his first eight years at the school.
