James DeKater O'Daniel

1. James DeKater O'Daniel, born May 27, 1852 in Elkton, Todd Co., KY; died December 13, 1926 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY.. He was the son of Jane E. Thompson O'Daniel, born March 29, 1817 in Orange Co., NC; died March 09, 1884 in Todd Co., KY. She was the daughter of 6. Joshua O'Daniel and 7. Susannah A. Grissom.

He married Georgia Eddie Jones February 28, 1878 in Christian Co., KY. and were the first people to make their home on O'Neil Avenue, after the area was opened up as a residential section. He was a shoemaker by trade.

Granddaddy James Dekater died nine years before I was born, so I will relate what my sister Ruby told to me. She says he was a kindly man. He had asthma real bad and would sit in a chair on O'Neal Avenue in Hopkinsville, where they lived at time, and breathe fumes from a pan that had some kind of herbs in it that made smoke. When he died in 1926, he was laid out in the front room. Ruby doesn't remember any flowers. Ruby also says that she remembers that a wagon would come by with cantaloupes and Granddaddy would buy one, and cut it in slices for her, Marie, Loucile and Jean, who was a small baby at the time.

Georgie Eddie Jones was born March 16, 1862 in Elkton, Todd Co., KY, and died February 03, 1953 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY. She was the daughter of Isaac Wilson Jones, son of Isaac Henderson Jones and Anna A. Wilkins. and Sarah Ann Harned was the daughter of James Colvin Harned and Sarah Wicks.

Grandma O'Daniel was the typical grandma. Apron on all day and night-hair with bun on top; and a good cook. After breakfast, she would start dinner. Chicken and all kinds of vegetables, cakes or pies. These would be put, in bowls, and put on the table, covered by a tablecloth. When time came to eat, she would just remove the cloth. Never warmed up anything, because the fire had all gone out of the wood stove.

Grandma O'Daniel had Alheimers for over 10 years before she passed away. She would sit in a chair all day long, either pleating the hem of her skirt or holding a doll. Her daughter, Emma (Mrs. Roy) Lovelace, took care of her till her death.

Maude Smoot Allen, wife of Elvie O'Daniel. Lived on O'Neal Avenue, Hopkinsville Ky. Elvie and Maude had two daughters who drowned in 1927. I have two beautiful letters that Uncle Elvie wrote to his mother and the grief he felt over losing these two precious daughters.

My mother: Mary Elizabeth Allen, wife of Isaac Washington O'Daniel.

Mary E. and Maude were sisters. They were the daughters of Charlie Henderson Allen and Sallie Mary Yonts, (daughter of Philip Robert Yonts and Sarah Ann Sherrod of Muhlenberg Co., Ky.
