Former Hardware Merchant of Cadiz Had Lived At Guntersville 25 Years
Two weeks ago, the Record contained a notice of the death of J. Hodge ALVIS, A former hardware merchant of Cadiz and whose wife was formerly Miss Susie WALLIS, of Cadiz. In making mention of this death, the Guntersville, Ala.,
Advertiser of June 1 says:
J. Hodge ALVIS, died Sunday morning about 7 o'clock at his home near town following an illness of several months. He suffered from a complication of diseases and his death was not unexpected.
Mr ALVIS was 57 years of age and well known in Guntersville and Marshall county, where he had resided for something like a quarter of a century.
He was a native of Kentucky, having been born at Henderson on May 22, 1875. He was a member of the Episcopal church.
About twenty-five years ago he came to Guntersville and has resided here since.
Before coming to Guntersville Mr Alvis was married to Miss Susie WALLIS and she with eith children, Rev. J. HODGE, Wallis, Walter,Susan, Mary, Charles, Major, Jim Thoason and Helen, besides a brother Powell ALVES, and hosts of other relatives and friends are left to mourn his death.
Funeral services were conducted at the Episcopal church Monday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. C. Morton Murray, rector of the Church of the Holy Comforter, Gadsden, and Rev. Cary Gamble, rector of the Church of the Nativity, Huntsville. The organist and quartet of the Church of the Holy Comforter sang.
Mr Alvis was laid to rest in the local cemetery with Masonic honors, Roden, director.
