ARTHUR LONGNewt Furguson shot and killed Arthur Long Saturday afternoon last at St. Charles, Hopkins county.
The particulars of the affair as near as we can get them are as follows: A feud of long standing was renewed, and Long told Ferguson that they would settle it that day. Later in the afternoon Long attacked Furguson with a club where upon Furguson drew a pistol and fired, the ball striking Long in the left breast inflicting a mortal wound. As Long was falling he drew his pistol and fired at Furguson, but without damage. Long died in a few minutes after being shot.
It is reported that Furguson surrendered to the authorities immediately after the killing, but, of this we are not positive. Long was a former resident of Crofton and has a sister living there now.

He was a clever, warm hearted man, but knew no fear and, being impulsive, his death in the manner was no surprise to his friends. The people here deeply sympathize with his family in the unfortunate occurrence and their loss

GERALDINE HIBBS LONGEARLINGTON, Ky. — Geraldine Hibbs Long, 83, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at National Healthcare Nursing Home in Dawson Springs.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Earlington.
Surviving are two stepdaughters, Ruth Virginia Hicks of Nortonville and Patty Long; a son, Wayne Hibbs of Earlington; two stepsons, Ronnie and Steve Long, both of California; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her first husband, Carlos Byrum, died in 1965 and her second husband, Eugene Long, died in 1989.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Reid-Walters Funeral Home, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

NIMROD LONGNimrod Long, of Russellville died suddenly last Saturday night at his home in Russellville.
He was one of "nature's noblest."
When only seventeen years old he opened a dry goods store in his native county. That year he was sent to Philadelphia by his senior partners to buy a stock of goods. About the time he arrived in the city he received intelligence of his partner's death, and he found himself in a "strange land without money or friends." But the courage of the boy did not forsake him. He went to a wholesale merchant and told him his position and wants. The honor of the honest face and spirit of the boy prevailed and the merchant told him to accept his endorsement for any amount he might wish to buy.
The Kentucky lad purchased a stock of goods suitable to the desires of his customers and returned home. The Philadelphia merchant was promptly paid and Long's credit established. This was the beginning of an honorable career. The story is from his own lips, only told to a few. The rest of his life is known to us all. He was a man just in business, generous in friendship, kind in distress. All over the land are marks of his munificence. He knew what education was without being educated, yet he had a wisdom superior to learning though subservient to it. He was one of the few who knew practical religion in its details. He was sympathetic, kind and tender. In his public life he was a success, in the full meaning of the word. He arose from nothing to something higher than celebrity, usefulness. He was more than a man, he was a Christian in all the world implies. Our readers, will pardon this mention.
He was our friend and counselor, and when he is committed to the grave we feel that one of earth's best is departed. This lesson we draw that, integrity, industry, and Christian virtue are fully rewarded in this life, and that the crown of glory in the hereafter dazzles the conception of the finite understanding.

11:05 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Jennie
Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the
Church Hill Baptist Church, Herndon, with the
Rev. James Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in
the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until
7 p.m. Tuesday at Gamble Funeral Home.A native of Hopkinsville, she was born July 9,
1962, the daughter of Mary Turnley Cruite,
Hopkinsville, and the late Prentice Cruite. She was
a member of the Church Hill Baptist Church where
she was an usher and a former member of the
junior choir.Survivors include two sons, Geremy and DeCory
Long, both of Hopkinsville; a daughter, Miessha
Long, Hopkinsville; three brothers, Prentice Cruite,
the Rev. George Cruite, Lonnie Cruite, all of
Hopkinsville; three sisters, Teresa Bussell, Linda
Cruite and Melissa McGee, all of Hopkinsville and
one grandchild.
RUTH MARTIN LONGRuth Martin Long, 86, of 2032 Washington St. died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at Community Methodist Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, James H. Long; two daughters, Nell Beardsley of Encinitas, Calf., and Eva Tompkins of Henderson; one son, Frank Long of Philadelphia, Miss.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home with the Rev. John Conn and the Rev. Jackie Long officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery.
Memorials may take the form of donations to the children's home in Louisville, Ky.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. today.
