A Tragedy At Fulton
The Son of a Christian County man Kills a Former Resident of Clarksville
Last Thursday evening at Fulton, W.W. Meacham, son of our Mr. Calvin Meacham, shot and killed one J.T. Lyle.
The Fultonian says:
The difficulty grew out of a bad feeling about non-payment of rent. Mr. Meacham was his brother's agent, and as such, had called on Lyle several times for rent due, and finally served a written notice upon him, demanding payment or the house after the usual form. This seems to have incensed Lyle, who accordingly called Meacham who was passing, into the drug store. Meacham went in and Lyle at once commenced cursing him, using the most bitter oaths. All this Meacham seemed to "take" at the time, when he got home, his wife informed him that the matches were out, and he went back to get some, when Lyle invited him to go to the back end of the store saying, "Meacham, come back, and let us settle that matter now." Meacham assented, both started back, Lyle in advance. When Lyle had almost reached the prescription case, which is in the far end of the store, Meacham about four feet behind him, Meacham drew a pistol and commenced firing upon Lyle, firing several times three shots taking effect. One shot striking in the fleshy part of the right thigh, another struck on the right side, just below the shoulder blade, and the third and fatal shot entered between the sixth and seventh rib, on the left side, piercing the heart and fracturing the seventh rib on the opposite side, producing instant death. The deceased, J.T. Lyle, came here from Clarksville, Tenn, about a year ago, and engaged in tobacco buying, and last fall entered the drug firm of Hutson, McClain & Co. Mr. Meacham has resided here several years, engaged in the furniture business, always regarded a quiet, peaceable, good citizen. A few months ago he married Miss Jessie Clanton, of this city. Meacham was interviewed and said" I very much regret the unfortunate affair, but I feel that I was justified in the act and did the shooting purely in self defense. All I want is justice, which I think the people of Fulton will give me. If I get it I am confident that I will be set at liberty.
