Pennyrile Deaths – March 12, 1999Jewel! Lamont Merritt Sr., 63, Hopkinsville, died at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Gordonville Baptist Church, with the Rev. A.T. Griffey officiating. Burial will be in Cave Spring Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Gamble Funeral Home..A native of Hopkinsville, he was born Jan. 12, 1936, the son of the late Allen and Georgiana Caidwell Merritt. He was a former employee of R.C. Owen Lumber Co. and had worked on the Pendleton Farms for 15 years. He was a member of the Sportsman’s Club and was a member of the Gordonville Baptist Church where he was an usher.Survivors include his wife, Readae Wilford Merritt; seven sons, William, Timothy, Michael, Tracey, Lamont and Jewell Merritt Jr., all of Hopkinsville, Allen Merritt, Evansville, md.; six daughters, Veronica, Cynthia and Arita Merritt and Joan Jones, all of Hopkinsville, Doris Merritt, Atlanta, Ga., Barbara Ann Merritt, Louisville; a brother, Roy Lee Merritt, Hopkinsville, 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Well Known Grover a Victim of Typhoid Pneumonia
Mr. Dan II. Merritt one of Hopkinsville's best known business men, died at his home on South Main Street, Friday morning. He had been down with typhoid pneumonia for several weeks. Mr. Merritt was 50 years old. He was born at Franklin, Tenn., and had spent the greater portions of his life in this city and county. At the time of his death he was a member of the grocery firm of E. B. Clark & Co., having acquired an interest in the business a year or two ago. He was married several years ago to Miss Ida Greenwood and his widow and two children survive him. The funeral services were held from the Christian church, of which deceased was a member Sunday morning. Eld. H. D. Smith the pastor, preached the sermon. The Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World lodges took part in the funeral services and a large procession of sorrowing friends followed the body to its last resting place in Hopewell Cemetery. Mr. Merrit was an upright and honest man, a good and useful citizen and a loving husband and father. The sympathies of many friends go out to his bereaved family.
