Splendid Citizen Takes Own Life
John L. Ricks Found Hanging In Barn Last Saturday Night
Had Been Away From Home Some Hours And Had Been Dead Some Time When Found
John L. Ricks, a prosperous farmer and substantial citizen living on Donaldson creek some twelve miles south of Cadiz committed suicide some time last Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Ricks left the house a little while afternoon, and when he did not return at night, and neighbors were informed and a search made for him. About ten o'clock at night his dead body was found hanging in a barn. The building had been used to store baled hay and the man had gone to the back part of the barn and climbed to the poles, and his body was swinging from a tier pole.
Esq. Sidney M. Frith, of Canton was communicated with and he held the inquest, and the jury returned a verdict that the man had come to his death by hanging.
There is a rumor that a bottle of carbolic acid was found in the barn nest day, but there was no evidence of this sort before the coroner's jury.
The rope he used was a short piece of plow line, only some eight or ten feet long.
John Ricks was one of the most substantial citizens of Trigg county. He was successful as a farmer and had many friends and was a good citizen. What cause could have prompted this rash act even the family is unable to tell.
He was the son of the late J. Lafe Ricks and had lived all his life in Trigg county. One brother, J. Lafe Ricks, resides at Brownell, Kansas, and he is also survived by two brothers in Trigg county, Luther and Dug F. Ricks and one sister, Mrs. Susan Armstrong, of the southern section of the county.
The wife, who was a Miss Hanson before their marriage and eight children, one son and seven daughters survive him. Two of the girls are married.
Funeral and burial were held Sunday afternoon at the family grave yard near his home.
